Well comp fishing has its highs and lows that’s for sure! This was my controller Steyn today on the river Rena. We had a big downpour of rain yesterday and overnight, the river came up about 40cm and turned a bit brown, which made things hard. My beat fished really well earlier in the comp when the river was low, but today I just couldn’t find the fish in any numbers. I only landed 1 legal fish, a 36cm grayling. There were 2 fish just undersized (a grayling and a brown trout), 2 fish dropped during the fight, and 2 break offs on the strike. I’m not happy about losing those fish, but apart from that I fished reasonably well I think. Apparently I did very similar things to the other teams before me, including the Spanish who caught a lot there in session 1. Anyway I finished near the bottom of the group today, hoping for a better result in the final session on lake Isteren tomorrow!

A better results day today for Team Australia and myself. Woke up to heavy rain fortunately the lake where I fished it wasn’t raining just overcast. This was our controller Vegar, and I shared the boat with South African Jacques Marais. We worked together, I got 6 fish on Lake Solensjoen to finish 3rd for the session, and an awesome result for Scott Haslock with 24 fish and first place on the river Rena, go Scotty!

Well session 2 is finished, I was on the Glomma river today, the other really large river in the competition. However my beat today was almost the opposite of yesterday….i had a long slow glide with no fast water in it, which turned out to be a disadvantage as most fish today were caught in nymphing water. The slightly quicker water you can see at the beginning was about 100m out and I couldn’t reach it (water was too deep in between). I found some rising fish early on at the back of the beat and managed to catch a few by targeting individual rising fish with a dry fly. But after the first hour things slowed down, and I ended up with only 8 fish for the 3hr session. That might not sound too bad, but the winner of today caught 43….😮. Anyway I came in 8th today, not too bad but I can do better. Great to see team mate Col Nicholson win the lake session today, he’s smashing it! I’m on the other lake Solensjoen tomorrow, hoping for a good boat session! :)

Session 1 for me was on the Femundselva River. My controller Runa was a legend, wonderful to have the locals volunteer for these events, and he was happy with his new Aussie cap and fishing buff. The rivers here are much larger than we are used to back home, and they push really fast. I went over at least 5 times today, and ended up emptying a couple of bucket loads full of water out of my waders at the end…😂🥶. I finished with 11 fish and came 7th in my group, middle of the field. A great experience for my first world championship session, and hopefully something to build on in the coming days. Team Australia is also coming 7th after day 1. :)

What an honour to carry the flag for Australia in the opening parade in Norway! Looking forward to my first international comp!
