Maya Perry’s solo exhibition at RAINRAIN gallery is both tender and powerful, full of tranquility and wonder. It is a conversation on humanness and existence. With the drawings, we see snapshots of thoughts, memories, feelings, and with the paintings we see narratives and longer moments of growing, returning, and becoming. This exhibition navigates the spaces where memory fractures and re-forms, dealing with the complications of the past.
This breaking and rebuilding of memories evokes the sensation of a dream that is remembered before it was ever had, before it ever existed. Perry uses many symbols and motifs within the works to depict memories and how life is formed around them, growing into many new forms and directions in the process. Like a small seed that grows into a sapling, extending in many directions within its foundations, into new directions, however, it always returns to what first created it.

Curating an exhibition at Cornell doesn’t require waiting until after graduation or climbing a long academic ladder. The Art Department makes the process unusually accessible—for undergraduates, graduates, and faculty alike. Within the department, there are two dedicated galleries, and under the larger umbrella of the AAP College, a third gallery also accepts exhibition proposals. Each semester, a committee comes together to review applications for the following term. It was within this framework that two graduate students took on the challenge of organizing a large group exhibition. Michael Morgan, who co-curated the exhibition with Elina Ansary, tells us about the process behind the show.

September in New York is a sensory crescendo—fashion, tennis, and art converge in a city that thrives on spectacle. At the center of it all, The Armory Show 2025 returned to the Javits Center from September 4–7, hosting over 230 exhibitors from 35 countries and drawing more than 50,000 visitors. This year’s edition, the second since its acquisition by Frieze, was slightly smaller than last year’s—but no less ambitious. Dealers reported strong momentum from VIP day onward, especially for works at lower price points, while higher-priced pieces moved at a measured pace. Many noted a noticeably younger crowd—engaged, curious, and eager to discover.

Under the leadership of newly appointed Director Kyla McMillan, the fair has evolved into a dynamic platform for dialogue. It retains its New York identity while embracing a sharper, more inclusive curatorial focus. “We want to be the essential American fair,” McMillan says—not in dominance, but in resonance.

European participation added a vital layer to the fair’s international scope. Fifty-two galleries from across the continent brought curatorial rigor and regional nuance.

Sparkling surfaces abound in Backscatter, OVERLAP’s quietly radiant summer show of works by Funlola Coker, Katherine Mitchell DiRico, Jesse Kaminsky, Joetta Maue, Leah Piepgras, and Esther Solondz, curated by Alicia Renadette. On a clear summer midmorning, sunshine falls across shimmering layers of glass, crystal, gold leaf, copper, bronze, salt, acrylic, and clear liquid. Materials catch and refract light. The overall effect is of a hushed brilliance that draws you in, inviting a closer look.

The 2025 art fair season has descended upon us, and with it comes a myriad of activities. Amidst the hustle and bustle of moving around the cities to see what’s on view, there were many standouts at this year’s presentations at the Armory and Art on Paper.

When artist Alexandra Limpert invited Janet Rutkowski to co-curate Reclamation in honor of her longtime friend and Holland Tunnel founder Paulien Lethen, Rutkowski accepted without hesitation. Although she had just finished curating and exhibiting in several projects, she embraced the challenge with what she describes as her “devil-may-care” approach. The exhibition’s title emerged quickly, reflecting her interest in the idea of recovery and renewal.
Reclamation was conceived around the use of found and reclaimed materials. The show brings together Hudson Valley artists who relocated from Brooklyn and New York, alongside those who remained in the city. This duality echoes the trajectory of Holland Tunnel Gallery itself, founded in Williamsburg in 1997 and expanded to Newburgh in 2018. For Rutkowski, the project became about relationships, reconnecting with artists from the Williamsburg and Greenpoint scene of the 1980s—many of whom she had not worked with or spoken to in decades.

“Coming full circle and making whole” is how Holly Wong describes her process of repair—working with memory, reassembling fragments, and layering paint, fabric, and light into new forms. On view at SLATE Contemporary in Oakland from September 5 through October 11, 2025, Full Circle is her second solo exhibition with the gallery. It brings together collaged paintings on shaped aluminum and wood panels, mixed media drawings, wall-based fiber and LED installations, and a heat-molded acrylic assemblage, presenting a mid-career survey of her work.

In MIST, four artists are brought together to take the inspiration of summer, and find a way to break through the heatwaves that have recently hit New York. There is a dialogue between the artists and their various takes on works on paper, bringing forth summer sensibilities, airiness, freshness, and a feeling of being free. Each artist offers a different series of works.
Walking into the gallery, I gravitated immediately to the back corner. Lined with deckled- edge papers that slightly hovered off the wall, I was greeted with the work of Nell Waters. These pieces become an abstraction of nature and an illustration of ethereal, hovering feelings. The fleeting flashes of greens and yellows washing over handmade paper resemble sunspots. It’s as if the washes of watercolor are leaves falling slowly in the breeze, the sun glowing vibrantly through them. These small-scale watercolors explore gesture, transience, and the meditative quality of diluted pigment on paper. Separate from Waters’ usual large-scale oil paintings, these works reflect a quiet, poetic response to the natural world, and carry with them the show’s theme of a misty oasis, an escape into nature.

Water Way, Mary Heilmann’s newly opened show at Guild Hall in East Hampton and her first large-scale museum show on Long Island’s East End, is a joyous celebration of 40 years of the artist’s career. The water-themed exhibition includes not only paintings and works on paper but also chairs, a small table, and ceramics, the latter either on its own or incorporated into a painting as in the 2020’s red acrylic Barrel and Tube. Heilmann is a longtime resident of Bridgehampton and her reverence for the ocean reverberates throughout, underpinned by an underground, punk rock/new wave, California surf culture ethos.
