Celebrating one year of the Primitive Art Group’s “1981-1985” DLP / Digital

Primitive Art Group ‘1981-1986’ gatefold 2xLP was released October 25, 2024. This album consists of material from the group’s only two albums, one LP of ‘Five Tread Drop Down’ plus “Cecil Likes to Dance” a never-before-released live recording from Thistle Hall (1984) and the full 1985 LP Future Jaw-Clap.

Completely unavailable since mid-1980s, we remain exceedingly proud and feel lucky to have worked closely with members of the group to present this crucial contribution to New Zealand’s music history.

“While Primitive Art Group undeniably draws upon the tradition of free jazz, their music side-steps most of the expectations and tropes of that particular idiom, drawing on the contentious irreverence of punk to draw the music into fairly unprecedented realms within the moment it emerged. Across the album’s four sides, raucous, playful sounds unfold that at times border on the carnivalesque, rising and falling within a brilliant soup of interplay. Open, airy and free, the group moves from the tangible toe tapping tune to full-on sonic abstractions, built from clattering polyrhythms, bristling tonal and atonal jabs, and a striking sense of texture, creating an entirely fresh and vital form of free improvisation that’s as light and breezy as it is deadly serious”
