Milan Watchdog Halts Facial Recognition at Linate Airport

Italy’s privacy regulator has suspended the use of a facial recognition system at Milan’s Linate Airport, underscoring the country’s strict approach to data protection.

The system, called Faceboarding, allowed adult passengers who opted in to move through security without showing an ID. However, the Garante per la Protezione dei Dati Personali ruled that the program lacked sufficient safeguards for travelers who chose not to use it.

Venice entry fee dates in 2026: When will tourists need to pay an entry fee?

Venice is expanding its day-tripper entry fee again in 2026, after launching the contentious scheme two years ago in a bid to tackle overtourism in the Italian canal city.

The fee system will be active on 60 days in 2026 - up from 54 days last year and double the number of days it was in effect in 2024 when it was first introduced to ease pressure on Venice from mass tourism.

Man survived and faces charges of manslaughter.

An 83-year-old woman in Milan was killed instantly after being hit by a man who jumped from his fourth-floor balcony in a su***de attempt.

The 70-year-old man survived the incident, which occurred in the courtyard of an apartment block on Via Fratelli di Dio in the Baggio district of Milan on Sunday evening.

Milan to feature in sequel to The Devil Wears Prada as call goes out for massive number of extras.

Italy’s fashion capital Milan will feature in The Devil Wears Prada 2 whose producers are seeking to recruit up to 2,000 extras, according to Italian news reports.

Auditions are reportedly being held at a studio in the city centre, offering locals a chance to be part of the major Hollywood production which began filming in New York.

The film is reportedly looking for men and women over the age of 30 years, preferably those who already work in the world of fashion, design, communications, and events, according to Milano Finanza.

Armani funeral will take place on Monday.

The mayor of Milan has declared a day of mourning for the legendary Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, who died on Thursday aged 91, to coincide with his funeral.

Armani “was and will always remain one of the greatest representatives of Italian and Milanese fashion in the world”, mayor Beppe Sala said in a statement, describing him as “a man full of talent and interests, capable of infusing his creations with the sober and elegant style of his personality, measured and never excessive”.

240 tiramisù enthusiasts to battle it out for world title in Italy.

The 2025 edition of the Tiramisù World Cup, now in its ninth year, will take place in the north Italian city of Treviso from 10-12 October.

The event will see 240 tiramisù enthusiasts, both Italian and foreign, battle it out to win the world title over the course of three days.

Venice Film Festival runs from 27 August to 6 September.

Hundreds of Italian and international figures from the world of cinema and culture have joined an appeal from the Venice4Palestine (V4P) group ahead of the upcoming Venice Film Festival.

The V4P sent an open letter to the Biennale di Venezia and the festival’s organisers on Friday, urging institutions and sectors of film, art, culture and education “to be more courageous and clear in their condemnation of the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the ethnic cleansing throughout Palestine at the hands of the Israeli government and army”.

A young motorist who failed an alcohol test near Treviso northern Italy phoned his father to collect him from the police station however officers noticed that he too was drunk.

The incident occurred over the Ferragosto holiday weekend at Castelfranco Veneto after the driver was stopped by municipal police for a breathalyser test.

Netflix halted filming for two days after tragedy.

Filming for the fifth season of hit Netflix series Emily in Paris resumed in Venice on Saturday, two days after the sudden death of the show’s assistant director.

Diego Borella, 47, died on Thursday evening after collapsing while preparing for the final take of the day at the city’s historic Hotel Danieli.

Venice has officially ushered in a new era of canal safety with the full activation of its speed-detection system for boats, informally dubbed the “barcavelox.” After a two-month trial without penalties, the system began issuing fines at midnight on August 1.The first day brought encouraging results: only 20 fines were recorded, a sharp drop from the average of 150 daily violations logged during the testing phase.

Jewish Family Assaulted at Milano–Laghi Motorway Rest Area

Lainate, July 28, 2025 – A French jewsish family was assaulted on Sunday afternoon at a motorway service area near Lainate, along the Milano–Laghi highway. The father and his six-year-old son, both wearing religious attire, were targeted with insults and pushed by a group of people while stopping at the rest area.According to accounts from those present, a man began shouting “Free Palestine” before others joined in with slogans such as “Go back home” and “This is not Gaza.” The father was reportedly pushed to the ground, and his glasses were broken during the altercation. His son was momentarily separated from him but was soon reunited.

Venice to feature in new season of hit Netflix series Emily in Paris.

Filming for the fifth season of hit Netflix series Emily in Paris will get under way in Venice from 5-15 August as the show moves north from Rome to the Italian canal city.

The “extraordinary” news was announced by the governor of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, who said it confirmed “how attractive our region is for major international audiovisual productions”.
