We’ve had several questions about the fire at the Walmart in Montgomery yesterday and why the Oswego Fire Protection District was the agency that responded.

It’s a fair question—and a good opportunity to explain what our fire district actually covers.

The Oswego Fire Protection District serves more than just the Village of Oswego. Our response area includes a significant portion of the Village of Montgomery, a small portion of the Village of Plainfield, and even a very small portion of the United City of Yorkville. In addition, we cover a large area of unincorporated Kendall County (including Boulder Hill), as well as a small portion of northwestern Will County.

Fire district boundaries are established differently than municipal boundaries, so they don’t always line up with village or city limits. Because of that, it’s not uncommon for us to respond to incidents in areas that people may associate with a neighboring community.

We hope this helps clear things up, and as always, we appreciate the community’s support and interest in what we do.

Walmart has reopened. Thank you to the Oswego Fire Protection District and the other responding agencies that assisted with quickly evacuating the store and ensuring safety.

Due to a fire-related incident reported today at 12:49P, Walmart will be closed for business in Montgomery until further notice.

There were no injuries reported by officers on scene, and the building was safely evacuated while fire officials investigated.
