THA Deputy Chief Secretary Dr Faith Brebnor has labelled the event a resounding success.

“We’ve had the largest crowds; we’ve had an incident-free period – as far as has been reported by the TTPS and the other stakeholders; we’ve had occupancy rates at our hotels and guesthouses sky high; and I think generally this injection into the economy of Tobago was one that is worth it.”

Brebnor said when the current administration decided to launch the brand-new carnival product within their first year in office, it was “certainly a herculean task, but it was done.”

“We did it. We learnt from the mistakes that were made during the previous years, and we would continue to learn from the lessons that we gather as we go along. I am really, really happy. All of the reports shows that people truly enjoyed themselves and this is what we need. I look forward to Tobago October carnival 2026.”

Venezuela’s National Assembly has declared Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar “persona non grata,” as it continues to accuse her Government of supporting United States military aggression against the Bolivarian Republic. However, Persad-Bissessar has again dismissed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s comments as meaningless.

During a parliamentary session yesterday, lawmakers voted unanimously in favour of the motion under Article 111 of Venezuela’s constitution and also endorsed Maduro’s decision to suspend all energy agreements with Trinidad and Tobago.

So, what should we conclude? Pink October does have an influence: it increases visibility and can generate measurable short-term increases in information-seeking and, in some studies, screening and testing.

But its public-health value is maximised only when the month’s energy is linked to accessible services, and outreach is well and truly targeted to underserved communities, with year-round education and prevention strategies.

Without those elements, this month risks producing awareness that fades come November—or worse, a commercialised pink display that just hides the barriers many women face in getting screened and treated.

Ideally, a pragmatic way forward is to keep using the platform—it works for visibility—but pair Pink October with sustained programmes, clearer prevention messaging for not just breast but other female reproductive cancers, and of course, funding that reaches the community with follow-up services all year long. This is how awareness stops being just a pretty colour and starts becoming outcomes.

Now approaching the end of Pink October when the breast cancer message is clearly in the spotlight, the question remains whether this annual surge truly improves women’s reproductive-health awareness and outcomes.

MEDIA RELEASE

One Killed in Police-Involved Shooting, Shotgun Seized

One man was killed and a shotgun seized during a police-involved shooting incident which occurred in the Eastern Division yesterday morning.

Reports indicate that officers of the Mayaro Criminal Investigations Department (CID), received information of a man armed with a gun in the Guayaguayare district, around 2 am, on Monday 27th October, 2025.

On arrival at the location, the officers observed a man run into a wooden structure and retrieve an object that appeared to be a firearm from under a bed.

The man is alleged to have pointed the object at the officers and several clicking sounds were then heard. The officers gave the man verbal commands to put down the weapon, but he did not comply.

In keeping with the Use of Force Policy, the officers discharged their fi****ms in the direction of the man, who was hit about the body.

The wounded man was taken to the Mayaro Health Facility for treatment, where he subsequently died. He has since been identified as Ainsley Glenn Gonzales of Mayaro.

One sawed off shotgun was recovered from the scene.

Investigations are ongoing into the above incident.

Meanwhile, in the Northern Division, Task Force officers conducted an exercise in the La Horquetta district between 6 pm and 9 pm, on Sunday 26th October, 2025.

During the exercise, the officers searched the home of a 27-year-old male suspect which resulted in the discovery of 1.175 kilogrammes of cannabis.

The exercise was coordinated by Snr. Supt. Maynard-Wilson, Supt. Mc Kenzie, ASP Pitt and spearheaded by Insp. Gadar.
