A year and a half after Inn on the Beach took a big hit from a rogue wave, the business is fully habitable and operational, a remarkable achievement considering the extent of the damage wrought. It is a tribute to the skills and especially the determination and spirit of local government, businesses and individuals — most of all, the hotel’s owner. More than 80 volunteers, sponsors, partner families and Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County (HFHVC) staff gathered at the Vista Campanario build site in Camarillo last month for the annual Women Build 2025 event. The participants worked side by side to paint inside three of the eight housing units under construction. When complete, these eight homes will go to local families — many of whom took part in the event, putting their own “sweat equity” toward their future homes. Sponsors included Bank of America, AAA, Edison, HR Business Solutionz, Nicholas Planning & Development and H.O.M.E.

“Don’t look at today as just a day of painting,” said HFHVC CEO Darcy Taylor. “You are, in essence, changing people’s lives. Long after we’re gone, these buildings are going to be here, and people are going to be living in these houses, blessing families over generations. Habitat Ventura is not just about our organization — it’s about the community and sponsors who make this possible.”

“Homes are the safe place where families thrive, and that makes the community strong. Bank of America is very committed to Ventura County and has been supporting Habitat for Humanity for over 30 years nationally,” said Midge Campbell-Thomas, Ventura-Santa Barbara President of Bank of America, who attended the event. “It’s always rewarding to come here, meet volunteers, and see firsthand the meaningful impact these homes have in our community.”

True to its name, Warbringer Bourbon packs a punch. The rich, smoky and complex whiskey handcrafted by Oxnard’s Sespe Creek Distillery is a powerhouse of flavor, with hints of honey and spice against a solid backbone of mesquite. More campfire than caramel, with a smoldering finish that lingers long after the fire is gone. “Barbecue” is the word that usually comes to mind — and that’s by design. Sespe Creek Distillery features on the cover of this month’s issue. Read and subscribe to our FREE digital edition at ventanamonthly.com.
