In East Austin, the 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 stands as a living testament to that legacy.

Born and raised in the neighborhood once known as Blackland, 88-year-old Albert J. Walker reflects on his journey as one of Austin’s first Black firefighters — and the vibrant community that shaped him.

“It was a place where we lifted each other up,” he shares. “We built a life here, even when the world said we couldn’t.”

𝗛𝗶, 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗲!! Austin’s Barbie-themed cafe may have wrapped up for the moment, but it was 𝘵𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘣𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘴 while it lasted!

The 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗯𝘂 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗳𝗲, which transformed 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗼. into a retro dream from April 4 to June 8, brought us life‑size Barbie boxes, roller‑rink nostalgia, and colorful menu items from MasterChef finalist .

Though the café is now closed for the season, don’t worry—this pop-up was all about making memories, one beach burger and Cali Collins cocktail at a time.
