Watch a slow moving video for the new Deaf Center single "A Second", which is an outtake from the upcoming new album "Through Time", coming this spring on Sonic Pieces. Originally conceived as the album’s final track, it ultimately proved to be stronger as a standalone piece.

Releasing three new albums during 2025 was a rather large endeavour for Sonic Pieces. But most of this was already in the works in 2024, and in the case of Rauelsson’s “Niu”, even longer, as he invested a great deal of time in composing, recording, and refining this album. And we had already chosen the colours for the record covers in the summer of 2023, long before I had even heard the music. So it was wonderful to finally see the album come out at the beginning of the year and to also accompany Raúl for a few concerts in Portugal and Spain, together with Deaf Center, around the release. And as if it wasn’t enough to expand this album into an art book, we also realised an installation for it at mi - so this spring, which turned out to be a truly unique project.

The second release was a more spontaneous one and came out of the Sonic Pieces 15th anniversary showcase at Morphine Raum, Berlin in October 2024. Erik and Otto, who on this occasion played together as Deaf Center for the first time since 2019, were very happy with the recording of their performance. And although I was initially a bit sceptical about releasing it, they eventually convinced me to put it out on vinyl, which turned out great and I’m really grateful for this.

Last but not least, and perhaps the most special release of 2025 for me, was the debut album of solo piano compositions by Ruth Maine. It felt like a true collaboration in some ways, with a lot of ideas exchanged, and it partly bears my own signature, at least visually. And even if this may not be obvious, it draws a bow to the very beginnings of Sonic Pieces. It’s undoubtedly a deeply personal release.

Furthermore, I’ve spent a large part of this year preparing things for 2026. A few days ago, we already shared a little teaser for the next release. And there’s more to come. Keep an eye out 👀

/ Monique

DEAF CENTER - "A SECOND" (Digital single, out now) : https://deafcenter.bandcamp.com/track/a-second

As the year is closing, we offer a glimpse into 2026 and share with you today a new piece from Deaf Center entitled “A Second”. It is now available digitally on all platforms.

“A Second” is an outtake from the upcoming Deaf Center album “Through Time”, to be released on Sonic Pieces in spring 2026. Originally conceived as the album’s final track, it ultimately proved to be stronger as a standalone piece. Yet, it conveys a sense of closure, which is why we decided to end the year with it and release it in the final days of 2025.

Monique believed that if she can convince artists on her label to perform pieces by Ruth Maine, she should also give it a try herself. Here’s her playing a short version of “Open Heart”.

Monique has rarely played piano before, but probably no one has listened as much to Ruth’s album “Found Keys” as she did. To her it has become one of the most special projects she’s been working on. When Monique first met Ruth in Berlin in 2008, she could never have imagined that one day she would be able to release a record with her. Well, it only took 17 years!

Special thanks to Otto A Totland for helping Monique to find the keys!

Raúl Pastor Medall, better known as Rauelsson, has released his 3rd solo album for Sonic Pieces, entitled “Niu”, earlier this year. Here he plays an interpretation of “Nesting” by our common friend Ruth Maine at his home in Benicàssim, Spain.

Raúl made his entry into the world of Sonic Pieces with his appearance on the Portland Stories compilation, one of the labels very first releases, in 2009. He and Monique met shortly after in Berlin, which was the starting point for a wonderful long-term collaboration. Raúl has so far released three full-length solo records on Sonic Pieces and the soundtrack for the Danish film “Darling” together with Erik K Skodvin. We have also collaborated on a publication for mi - so editions and had an exhibition as well as an in-store session with Raúl at our Berlin space this spring.

The 2nd video in our series of Sonic Pieces related artists interpreting pieces by Ruth Maine comes from no other than Otto A Totland. Here’s his take on "All Rose No Thorn”.

Otto first appeared on Sonic Pieces on a 7inch split with Erik K Skodvin in 2012. Since then, he has not only become an essential part of the label but also a dear friend. His solo piano albums “Pinô”, “The Lost” and “Companion” are timeless classics, with the latter turning 4 years old this month. Otto is also one half of Deaf Center, who have so far released three records on Sonic Pieces and have something exciting coming up next year ;)

Alex Kozobolis plays an interpretation of “If It Was” by Ruth Maine. It's the first in a series of short videos by Sonic Pieces related artists performing pieces by Ruth.

Alex is part of To Move together with Anna Rose Carter and Ed Hamilton. Their album with the same name came out on Sonic Pieces almost exactly 3 years ago, in November 2022. We also had the pleasure of having Alex perform at mi - so, and he just released a new album of beautiful solo piano compositions, entitled "Asymmetry", which coincided with the release of Ruth's debut album "Found Keys".
