Concerns Raised Over Traffic Congestion at Junction in Navan

Concerns over growing traffic congestion on a key road in Navan were raised during the July meeting of the Navan Municipal District.

Councillor John Duffy brought forward a motion calling on Meath County Council to address traffic flow at the junction on Commons Road, near the traffic lights at Dan Shaw Road and Clogherboy. He suggested slip roads or similar measures to ease pressure on the route.

“This is now necessary because of increased volumes of traffic and the anticipated additional traffic once the new bridge over the Blackwater becomes operational,” he said.

The new bridge over the River Blackwater, which began construction in January 2025, is expected to be completed by September 2025.

Cllr Duffy explained how traffic builds up significantly during morning hours.

“In the mornings the traffic is backed right up into Clogherboy with a build up of 20 or more cars if there is a motorist waiting to turn right at Commons Road,” he said.

“It is not working as it is. And that is before you add in the opening of the new bridge or the 300-odd houses that are being built by Cairn Homes out the Commons Road. That junction has to be a priority,” he added.

The Fine Gael councillor warned that the new bridge will bring increased traffic from the northern parts of Navan, including Clonmagadden, as more motorists use the route to access the Trim Road.

“The bridge will be open in a couple of months and the rate at which houses are being built, this will be a significant problem by Christmas. It needs to be addressed.”

In a written response, Meath County Council noted that Cairn Homes is currently constructing houses on Commons Road, which will add to traffic at the already busy junction.

“The traffic generated by the development will result in additional traffic passing through this signalised junction. One of the conditions of the planning permission granted to Cairn Homes is that they are required to complete a detailed capacity assessment for the junction. This capacity assessment has not yet been submitted,” the council said.

“The detailed design of the junction by the Roads Department will follow the capacity assessment, allowing for the design and construction of the correct evidence-based traffic management solutions for the type and volume of traffic.”

The council added that a reminder has been issued by the Planning Department for the submission of this compliance.

🚜 SAFETY MESSAGE FOR ALL ROAD USERS 🚜

Farmers are now harvesting intensively, and with the current dry spell, roads will be busier than ever with large farm machinery moving between fields and farms.

⚠️ Please remember RSA guidelines when you meet large farm machinery on public roads:

✅ Stay back: Keep a safe distance. Large tractors and harvesters need more space to manoeuvre and stop.
✅ Do not overtake unless it is absolutely safe and you have clear visibility ahead.
✅ Be patient: Farm machinery often travels short distances. Waiting a few moments can prevent serious accidents.
✅ Watch for wide or swinging loads, especially on bends or narrow roads.
✅ Expect turning movements: Indicators may not always match road positioning. Machinery often turns wide or into hidden entrances.
✅ Slow down when approaching farm machinery from behind or opposite direction.

🌾 Farmers are working hard to get crops harvested safely and efficiently. Let’s all do our part to share the roads responsibly this harvest season.

💛 Stay alert. Stay patient. Stay safe.

For over 20 years, Johnstown Football Club has been the heart of this community—bringing people together, building lasting connections, and giving young people a real sense of purpose through sport. In a town that’s been completely overlooked when it comes to proper community facilities after hundreds of millions of euro spent building, They didn’t wait around for the community to lose out on sports —they made it happen.

Their legacy is effecting generations. Imagine they have impacted positively thousands of lives. Who else can say that?

With nothing handed to them, they built something powerful. The club has been recognised by the FAI, and with hundreds of active members, they've proudly flown the flag for Johnstown year after year. The impact they've had on local youth is huge—lives changed, friendships made, confidence built.

This isn’t just a football club. It’s a community movement—driven by passionate volunteers and visionaries who rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They continue to show up, to give back, and to lead.

Now it’s time for Meath County Council, local TDs, Senators, and Councillors to step up. Johnstown Football Club deserves proper facilities. They deserve a home. A clubhouse. A future that matches the heart and hard work they’ve given this community.

If you have a local business this is an ideal social project to support. But really our politically elected not only need to deliver to this club to replicated it in other areas as its outstanding.
