𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐳𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐚’𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐬”
In Alaska’s icy winters, wood frogs transform into 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬. Their hearts stop beating, their 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡, and much of their body water freezes—two-thirds or more. Yet, thanks to powerful natural antifreeze (glucose and urea), these brave frogs survive the freeze without ice damaging their cells.
When spring arrives, it’s like pressing a reset button. The frogs thaw from inside out—heart beats again, breathing returns, and brain activity resumes. Some have been found frozen solid for six months straight, only to hop away restored and ready for spring.
