Terpstra Studio - UR2B Studios UR2B Studios began in 1991 when Dan Terpstra's 4 Track was requested by friends and is now a well st

In the early 1990s Dan Terpstra was playing in a few bands and decided it was time to capture some of the sound. With a few ElectroVoice and lower end Microphones, he bought a Fostex 280 4-Track Recorder and proceeded to help out his friends. With expanding mixers and microphones the projects became big enough to install the confidence to move to Tennessee. Very little recording was done on

the 4-Track except personal songs at that time which saw the expansion of Cakewalk on a Windows computer sync'd to the Fostex giving 3 tracks and unlimited virtual sequencing. Life changed dramatically with some frustration happening in the Nashville area so in 1997 things came back to Grand Rapids. A few little recordings happened during that time but in July of 2000 Dan bought an ADAT from a yet unknown Jad Abumrad. A couple bands came over to record in the new Digital Medium with surprising results but the weakness of lower quality Mic Pre-Amps and mixers still held the sound back. After starting a business in the Photography Industry, the music creation and recording had all but disappeared in December of 2003 but in 2011 a new ProTools system began experimentation which lead to Logic, a new computer, Logic X, and eventually Studio One by PreSonus in April 2016. Expansion began quickly and with the Zedi 10 mixer proving to be too limited for band work, the inclusion of the Antelope Audio Orion Studio Pro as well as Golden Age Pre-Amps and Compressors. On October 21 it'll be 56 years since Jean-Louis Lebris de Kérouac died. Better known to us as "Jack Kerouac", he inspired many and died young. Musician Ronnie Elliott told a great story about the final days of Jack in his song Jack's St. Pete Blues.

On October 21, 2025 musician Jay Luttrull will be releasing his own version of the Elliott song which I collaborated, produced, and then created a video for it. Please find Jay on your favorite streaming network or YouTube and subscribe so you'll catch the release of this song when it hits the wires!

A couple weeks ago Scott and James came to record Jay Luttrull Music 's cover of Ronnie Elliott's "Jack's St Pete Blues and I used my stereo ribbon mic on drum overheads for the first time. It worked quite well so wanted show some isolation tests for **e Microphones!

On Juneteenth I had the please of working with like-minded, very talented, great personalities of Chris and Brett from the Sundogs. Their acoustic duo combines beautiful playing and harmonies at shows that use ZERO electricity from the grid and they came on a great day where we sent over 70kWh back to the grid (this recording used ZERO grid power)!

Introducing Bruce Madden with "Look in the mirror"!

Bruce came to me with a challenge that draws from all my talents in a true "Terpstra Studio" way. Not only were we going to piggy-back the audio recording on the music video at the same time, we were going to do it within sonic chaos!

We recorded Look In The Mirror outside on May 8, 2024 while neighbors mowed their lawns or played with their kids. The biggest challenge was it was a windy day but the best parts were the birds and flies who made it onto the recording.

After recording and producing the audio, the goal was to have a sort of "vintage" sepia tone video. This is the result!

Sitting back on this cold day thinking about something Mojo Nixon said…well, more like how Billy Bones Vits played for me and Jay Luttrull Music on a single we recorded last spring. I'm looking forward to finishing the rest of the projects as we have some exciting ones around the bend!

This is a little lyric video we put together for Jay and included some Bill Vits for his friends and family upon his passing. It's the PG13 version that is still "unreleased"!
