From her workshop in the attic, she spends her time making anything that pops into her head and shares the process across social media. It’s her mission to encourage more people into the craft by showing how accessible woodworking can be. She recently released her first book, titled Make Things. From Wood.

WHITNEY ALYSSA PARKER is a sewn abstract mixed media artist based in Redwood City, California. Trained in fashion design at the Savannah College of Art and Design and shaped by years in the bridal industry, Whitney found her way to fine art through an unconventional path and built something entirely her own. While most teens were focused on prom and pre algebra, Lorelai was analyzing social media patterns and fashion trends to break down the stereotype of quilting and ignite a fire of excitement for her truly unique fashion perspective. By elevating the art of quilting, she has bridged the gap between generations and opened the door to an entirely new audience.

MONICA JOHNSON lives in Plainfield, Indiana. Her art is inspired by traveling to fantastic places like Barcelona, the Swiss Alps, and the American Southwest. Her work reflects her love for nature in the choices of color, material, texture, and design. She has worked with Etsy and Joseph Altuzarra on a collection of leather crocheted stones. That project inspired her to push this idea further, resulting in quilted leather stones.

GRETA MIKKELSEN is a lifelong California girl who relocated to Jacksonville, Oregon, where she embraced her inner artist and now makes quilted art with antique to***co silks. She’s had several solo shows at museums across the country and has produced a book of her work, To***co Silks Reimagined. The silks transport her to a time 100 years ago, when women collected and sewed these tiny treasures into decorative quilts and other items, and it brings her joy to reimagine them today as art for a new audience.

Portland, Oregon-based textile artist Lori Mason returns to the pages of What Women Create with a story that beautifully illustrates the lasting connections creative work can spark. First featured in the Winter 2021 issue for her memorial quilts, Mason reflects on an unexpected full circle moment when a reader who saved that article for years eventually commissioned a quilt to honor her late husband.

There is a steadiness that comes when someone is truly ready for this kind of project. Grief cannot be rushed. When we spoke, there was clarity alongside her sorrow. She expressed deep trust in me as an artist while also sharing thoughtful preferences about color and design. That combination of trust and participation made her an ideal collaborator. I believe our alignment stemmed, in part, from the fact that she had allowed the idea of a quilt like this to percolate in the back of her mind for several years.

AGNES JACKIEWICZ, born in Poland, now living in Connecticut, creates abstract paintings that evolve through layers of color, texture, and surface. Her work explores the quiet emotional complexity beneath what first appears simple.

““Look again,” my father always says softly, almost as if it needed no explanation.
He taught me to find beauty in ordinary things, to slow down, and to look beyond what is obvious: a crack in the wall, a passing shadow, or a worn surface softened by time. It could be the way two unexpected colors meet, the texture of different materials bonded together, like rust against concrete. These subtle lessons taught me a different kind of attention to detail and gave me an abundance of inspiration, long before I knew I would become an artist”. —AJ
