RAMONES - ROCKET TO RUSSIA - 1977 The Ramones were the perfect bridge for my childhood love of novelty music into Punk. This album is like MAD Magazine come alive, the John Holmstrom art is perfect & really brings the package together.

Bärt Bootlegs - late 80s, early 90s. When I used to teach art classes I taught a cartooning class, this was in 2005 or so. One of the things I observed at the time was that the Simpsons were the closest thing the kids had to a common cartooning culture. Garfield had been on the wane for a while, as Newspapers became less & less important, smartphones hadn’t yet spread the memetic culture - but the Simpsons were there for everybody. One thing that’s important about bootlegs is being able to see yourself in the thing being bootlegged. Because Bart is the universal Brat - he just needs minor adjustments…

Don Martin - 1931 - 2000 - Don Martin was the cartoon face of MAD Magazine. His immediately recognizable, very comic style, using lots of unique sound effects (I always remember “sklutch” as the sound of stepping on a dog turd), bendy characters, with signature bent feet & twiddly fingers, bulbous noses, everything exaggerated that could be, defined the MAD way of looking at life: funny & absurd.

Works by Basil Wolverton - 1909-1978 Born in Central Point Oregon & lived in Vancouver, Washington - including doing some cartoon work for the Portland News. Wolverton’s visceral, overwrought, highly detailed style, emphasizing the wrinkles, folds, veins & other things that are normally overlooked contributed an entire language of grossness to Weirdo Art. He did work for mad & got his foot in the door with his winning illustrations of the world’s ugliest woman “Lena the Hyena” in Lil Abner.
