Glanmore Presents Victorian Era Bad ideas, for teething relief. During the 1800s there were many products marketed to help with teething; most containing harmful dr*gs, that wouldn't pass modern standards. One historic source had a curious recommendation for drug free relief: a dead mole tied around the neck of the infant. I have NO idea how this was supposed to help, but please DO NOT tie anything around a baby's neck. That alone is a BAD IDEA! *From "Hints on Health From The Victoria's" by Constance Moore *

Glanmore Presents Historic Bad Ideas, A Dubious Treatment For E.D. Sources for this one are a bit spotty, but given the nature of the issue involved, that maybe understandable. Some sources suggest in the 1800s to help me with their "libido" they would take pills of Arsenic! A very Bad idea! Note, for education and entertainment purposes only

Glanmore Presents Historic Good Ideas - The Electric Telegraph! The idea of sending messages with electric signals through wires dates back to the 1700s. Frrance had a rough working system by 1798. The development of the actual electric telegraph is a little convoluted. By 1838 over 60 different people claimed to have invited the first telegraph. In 1832 Samuel Morse started working on his version. He also developed 'Morse Code'. This was a significant jump forward and was eventually adopted by others. Morse's system was built in Washington DC (U.S.A.) in 1843. Western Union built its first transcontinental (U.S.A.) telegraph line in 1861. This near instantaneous messaging over vast distances fundamentally changed communications.

Glanmore Presents Historic Bad Ideas: Intentional Train Crashes. This seems to be an American phenomenon so not local to Glanmore, but interesting all the same. From 1896 to the 1930s showmen would organize and sell tickets to 2 trains crashing head-on. A very dangerous idea. Thanks to Kaz Rowe for your YouTube video that introduced me to this wild bit of history.

T.W. mention of Dr*gs! Glanmore Presents Historic Bad Ideas - Dr. Thomas' Elcetric Oil. This patent medicine cure-all was first developed around 1867. It was marketed as being able to cure everything from a toothache to deafness. It was renamed and reformulated a number of times, but the ingredients from an early iteration were recorded. They included oils of: Turpentine, Sassafras, and Hemlock as well as Alc0h0l, Laudanum and Chl0r0f0rm. A potent and potentially hazardous combination and a Bad Idea! Note: For educational and entertainment purposes. We are not supporting, promoting or endorsing dr*g use!!

Glanmore Presents A Historic Hair Product. Developed in 1857, Burnett's C0C0A !NE Hairdressing oil. Surprisingly, for the time it was created it does NOT contain any narc0t!cs. It is simply cocoa-nut oil and alc0h0l. The confusion with the name may have been a coincidence; or a marketing idea to sound similar to a different very popular product.

Glanmore Presents Victorian Bad Ideas -Milk Additives. Prior to milk pasteurization, milk could be kinda sketchy. Some Victorians used additives to "purify" older milk. These additives would mask the taste of bad milk and contamination. A lot of childhood illnessess were caused by contaminated milk.
