One minute you’re losing your hair in clumps. 😥

The next, you’re getting engaged. 🥹

The past couple weeks have reminded me of how high and low life can be. God gives bounteous gifts and celebrates with us on the mountaintops; but he’s also there when you’re wondering what’s happening, what you did wrong, where to go from here.

Life is a constant concert of beautiful operas and then tragic, discordant piano solos. But don’t worry—you’re not alone. We’re all going through the thick of it, and when you can’t depend on life going smoothly, depend on God and the community He’s surrounded you with.

Keep your eyes on the skies, and keep chocolate in your purse. 😉 Hug your loved ones and pray those hard prayers.

Because it’s a wild ride!!

I’ve been quiet on here, but for good reason. God has been working on my heart for the past 2 years. There have been so many highs and so many lows.

At one point, I was told I was crazy for believing in a good God we can’t even see. Months later, I sat in my car wondering if I was doomed to always see good in people that simply wasn’t there. I wondered if this city would eat me alive; if I had to change to survive, or if the city had already changed me too much.

I took a couple months off of church to just be with God. To ask Him “Why?” To beg Him to help me feel safe.

And then Ben.

God was working behind the scenes. This relationship bloomed slowly, yet sacredly. There was never a facade. There was no rush. But one day I woke up, and I realized—God had heard me.

He heard me when I wandered through the Wayfarers Sea Chapel, pondering the roses. He heard me when I asked Him to send me a good thing, to remind me he was still there. He heard me when I admitted I was struggling, but still loved Him above all else, I just needed to work out my salvation with fear and trembling.

Your answer to prayer may be something else: a job opportunity, a child, a new place to live. But trust that even when you are like Job and ask the hard questions, you can be honest. Keep that thread of loving God, and bring him your doubts and fears. He is big enough for it all.

And maybe, just maybe, you’ll wake up on the other side of it like it was all some vast dream (or nightmare) and the sorrow will grow numb and your heart will be warm.

And you will know. ❤️ (Read Samuel 1-2 if you need encouragement today, it’s one of my favorites)

In Isaiah 7, the Israelites are in a SITUATION,

💨 A situation that shakes them “as forests before the wind.”

God gives them 5 commands, and to me it seemed like something worth writing down in my notebook. When the God of the universe gives you advice on calming a trembling heart of fear, take note!

1 - BE CAREFUL. This can also be translated Take heed, wait, observe. Take time to just observe the situation. Note how you feel, the facts of what you’re dealing with, and if it’s really that dire.
2 - BE QUIET. Don’t jump to solutions/conclusions or freak out. Be still before the Lord (notice a pattern here of silence and calm?).
3 - DO NOT FEAR. It is so easy to skip all these steps and jump right to fear. Fear blinds us and makes our mind a loud place to be in. Take back the reins and refuse fear’s dominion.
4 - DO NOT LET YOUR HEART BE FAINT. Stay strong. Saying no to fear isn’t a one time thing—and yet it IS an option. Repeatedly remind yourself that fear is a liar and has no place in you.
5 - TRUST GOD. God offered to show King Ahaz a sign to prove that what He said was true—they WOULD conquer the invading army. But King Ahaz refused. His faith was enough: He took God at His word.

I hope these are practical help today! Save for later! 🔖

When reading passages I’ve read many times before, it’s easy to just glaze over it with the same thoughts as always. But, I’ve really been challenging myself to look at these well-worn Bible stories with fresh eyes.

Last night, moments from the life of Joseph (Jesus’ father) hit me. Many times, he was presented with difficult situations: his fiance was pregnant. A tyrannical king was after his child. He was told by God to move to another land. Joseph made his decisions:

🌼 WITH AN OPEN MIND. Sometimes, we make decisions that are perfectly valid and biblical…but God has another way that’s also just as good. Let’s not be so stubborn as to still insist on our own way.

🌼 THOUGHTFULLY. When Joseph originally decided to end his engagement with Mary, he could’ve made plans to be obnoxious and ruin her name. However, the Bible says he didn’t want to shame her and would do it quietly.

🌼 INTENTIONALLY. The Bible says Joseph “considered these things.” That points to a wise, thoughtful man who doesn’t make decisions on a whim. This reminds me of how Mary ponders the angel’s visit in her heart.

I always knew my works didn’t save me…but I’ve realized I never really acted like that.

For years, I felt SO pressured to “do the right thing,” lest God punish me. Like if I missed church one Sunday, I felt like I didn’t deserve ANY good thing.

I just was so careful to observe Paul’s warning in Romans 6:1-2 — “Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?”

And yet I forgot many basic principles, including:
🌼 Matthew 11:30 - For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
🌻Isaiah 64:6 - All our righteous acts are like filthy rags.

All the good I do is not enough to save me; I have already been saved by the blood of Christ. Yes, saved to good works, but so I can point others to God…not so I can prove I’m good enough. Because that’s impossible.

Thank you, God, for knowing our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15-16) and yet saving us.

🙃 Is it just me, or does the world seem all topsy turvy? Unfortunately, this isn’t a new phenomenon.

Isaiah 5:20
Woe to those who call evil good
and good evil,
who put darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter!

Our world is broken, and it’s pretty easy to see. From the way we treat each other to what is called good, there is so much that is WRONG.

But it all points to a greater truth: God is working, and he has a plan already in motion. One day, all will be set right and we won’t have to watch lies and injustice win out.

With God we shall do valiantly;
it is he who will tread down our foes.
Psalm 108:13

Nowadays, we may not have an army chasing us down like David had to deal with in the Psalms…but we do all have foes. It might be our past, or maybe our insecurities, or maybe it’s a negative character trait we feel we can’t shake. But God is bigger than it all! We can have victory through him.

Our faithlessness doesn’t nullify God’s faithfulness. (Romans 3:3-4)

Just sit on that.

How often are you moved by the failure of your humanity? In human relationships, we are disappointed when we see each others’ failings. And yet our character doesn’t negate God’s.

Though I am faithless, God is faithful.

Though I am unloving, God is full of love.

In every situation, God is all we need. And what’s crazy is he forgives us for how we lack, if we just ask. That means I can take a big sigh of relief, and it fills me with gratitude because the God of the universe will FORGIVE me?? How can we not be moved to glorify Him. •

“His praise is not from man but from God.” Romans 2:29

Can we say that’s enough for us? That if all we had—besides a crowd of people jeering at us—was a thumbs up from God Almighty?

We cannot bow to the mob. It will always be there, asking us why we swim against the current and worship an invisible God. But we have to remember to value God’s praise more than anything else. Because then we’ll be an UNSTOPPABLE force for the kingdom. ❤️

Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually. Psalm 105:4-5

I have a fascination with the word “seek” and take note every time it’s used in scripture. It’s ACTIVE; it takes INTENTION. It’s a daily CHOICE. And we seek things we care about and live and want, so when we seek God we’re showing our love for Him. •

“Those who are with us are more than those who are with them…” 2 Kings 6:16

I’ve always loved this verse because it speaks of the greater story of the universe—the layers we don’t see. How many times have I worried about my story, and yet God is working it all out invisibly? How many times have I felt alone or like the world is against me, and yet if only I could see the armies surrounding me?

I really take this verse literally. I am confident that God protects his people with armies of angels. I’ve felt it living in LA. This is a place rife with crime, and although it has become a sort of home for me, I’m not oblivious to the dangers.

And yet I feel God’s presence and His protectors around me. That doesn’t mean we can make dangerous choices (like walking down the sidewalk at night) BUT we should be able to more confidently walk through life, knowing he’s like a guard rail protecting us from falling into the gutter.
