From wildfires to hurricanes, we as Texans 🤠 have to be prepared for all kinds of weather. Having a "go bag" is one of the many ways you can prepare for an emergency or natural disaster🎒

Aside from having survival essentials in your "go bag," here are some other items we suggest including:

📄 Store all of your important documents in a waterproof bag/folder – Social Security card, Medicare card, insurance documents, vaccination records, etc.

💉 Pack a list of all of your allergies and medications with descriptions of what they do, the dosage, and administration times. Consider including any essential durable medical equipment, such as oxygen equipment.

🚨 Keep a list of resources that may be able to assist you during times of disaster so that you are able to differentiate between real and fake government imposters.

Don't have a go bag? Read this article from AARP to get an idea of what essentials should be included: https://www.aarp.org/family-relationships/emergency-go-bag/?msockid=082767dfb68c60983e9d72d3b7626128

Living in Texas unfortunately means that we are vulnerable to multiple disasters throughout the ️year. ⛈️ Often, these disasters hit without warning, leaving Texans frantic and This time of chaos is the perfect opportunity for scammers to strike 🚨

The best way to protect ourselves is to stay prepared. Here are some common scams during disaster:

👮 Government Imposters: Scammers will impersonate organizations that are deployed during times of need, such as FEMA, law enforcement, search and rescue teams, and many more. They will usually demand payment for disaster relief services but know that FEMA and state/federal agencies NEVER charge for their assistance.

🤲 Fake Charities: Posing as legitimate charities, scammers will ask for cash or unusual forms of payment such as cryptocurrency or digital payments. before donating, make sure to verify the legitimacy of a charity by checking Give.org or BBB.org. If donating through websites like GoFundMe, be sure to always use a credit card or third party like Apple Wallet, as they usually have policies in place in case you are defrauded.

🪪 Fraudulent Insurance Claims: Fraudsters may send you notices claiming that your insurance premium is past due and you must pay NOW or they will cancel your benefits. If you are being threatened or are worried about late payments, make sure to contact your insurance company directly. Beware of scammers offering "free" replacement medical equipment in exchange for your Medicare number. Never share your Medicare number or social in exchange for equipment from anyone other than a trusted healthcare provider.

Keep an eye out for our post later this week on what you should pack in your emergency go bag! 🎒

TXSMP Movie Morning! 🍿🎬

Last week, we got to host a different kind of fraud awareness education session where we showed the older adults at Wayne Johnson Community Center —Galveston County, Texas, a documentary series on romance scams 💔

The series was a great conversation starter on red flags and what to avoid sharing when talking to people online. We even heard about a romance scam story from one of the attendees!
