“Saving Etting Street follows master carpenter Shelley Halstead, founder of Black Women Build – Baltimore, as she trains young Black women in carpentry, electrical work, and plumbing to rehabilitate a row of abandoned houses in West Baltimore. Together, with cheers from long-time residents, they transform a run down block into a vibrant community of Black women first-time homeowners.”

🔆 REMIX EPISODE FT.

Cristela Alonzo knows about starting at square one — and then doing it again and again. In the second part of our interview, she talks to Alicia about facing her make-or-break moment, how she “had to go live a life to have things to talk about,” and why she’s back with her new tour, “My Affordable Care Act.” She writes about it all in her new memoir, Music to My Years.

🔆 NEW EPISODE FT.

When she was 15 years old, Elizabeth, an American citizen, persuaded her parents to allow her to stay in Arizona solo after their tourist visas expired. Despite facing housing and food insecurity, Elizabeth managed to graduate valedictorian of her high school class, before going on to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania. In this episode, we talk about why her calling to create change never allowed her to “let loose” like her peers, and her decision to share her story in her new memoir, “My Side of the River.”
