ALESTLE VIEW: Under Illinois law, student workers have the right to unionize at public universities. Unionizing will enhance the students' voice, and a number of students support speaking up.

Student worker unions play an important role in negotiating the terms of student employment, benefits, working conditions and job description.

In January 2025, The Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 14.3 million employees were members of a union — almost 10 percent of the U.S. workforce — in the previous year. Education, training and library occupations had the highest rate of union membership with 32.3 percent.

LIFESTYLES: From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, the Kimmel Belonging and Engagement Hub, in partnership with local and on-campus organizations, has highlighted and scheduled events like the Grupo Folklórico dance performance throughout the month to celebrate the Hispanic/Latinx community.

“[The programming] is truly just about creating spaces for students, faculty and staff where they feel like they belong, because they do belong on campus, and we want them to know that we want them to feel celebrated,” Kimmel Program Coordinator Isaac Fa’amoe said.

This month’s events range from informational workshops to festivals and game nights. All of the activities align with this year’s national Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month theme, “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future.”

NEWS: The SIU System is among several other Illinois universities being sued by President Donald Trump’s administration for allowing immigrants to pay in-state tuition.

The complaint specifically says that immigrants, who are referred to as “aliens,” are prohibited from the option of paying in-state tuition if there are any out-of-state U.S. citizens who do not also have that option.

“Illinois law classifies aliens who are not lawfully present in the United States as ‘residents’ of Illinois under certain conditions, making them eligible for reduced tuition for public state colleges and other post-secondary education benefits, while U.S. citizens and nationals from other states who do not meet the residency requirements must pay higher out-of-state tuition rates and do not qualify for certain other benefits,” the complaint said.

NEWS: At the SIU Board of Trustees meeting in two weeks, Chancellor James T. Minor and the Budget Reporting Workgroup will be presenting a budget outline for Fiscal Year 2026.

For the first time since 2017, the projected budget for FY26 is balanced, with revenue and expenses for FY26 both sitting at $341.6 million — meaning that SIUE will not be losing money over the course of the year.

A MATTER OF OPINION: I’ve had irregular periods throughout my adolescence. Starting the birth control pill and getting myself on a 28-day cycle at 22 years old brought me closer to my body, and it brought me closer to the women in my life.

When I began looking into birth control options, I was enticed by the idea of an intrauterine device, or an IUD. It seemed reliable, efficient and foolproof. But, when I found out it would stop my period, I hesitated.

I truly love having my period. Menstruation, for me, feels relieving. I know — what a provocative idea. But, the emotional build-up from the week prior finally dissipates, and I’m left with a grueling yet soothing week that makes me feel alive. So, when my doctor walked me through the ins and outs of birth control, I decided that it was the best option for me.
