Guide to 17 Major Yoga Disciplines:

3. Iyengar Yoga

Founded by B.K.S. Iyengar, this practice focuses on the precision of alignment in each pose, strength and flexibility.

A variety of yoga props (including yoga blocks, blankets, straps, chairs, walls and bolsters) are all common in Iyengar classes to ensure the student’s form is correct.

This style of yoga is fairly passive, but it provides a different type of physical and mental challenge, since you are required to hold poses for longer periods of time.

Iyengar is great for people wanting to learn the basics of yoga and who have recently suffered an injury. The practice is gentle and alignment based.

Hatha Yoga is a broad term for any style of yoga where physical postures are incorporated.

“Ha-” meaning sun in Sanskirt and “-tha” meaning moon equals a balanced practice when movement and surrender are combined into one single class.

Almost every type of yoga taught in the West is a form of Hatha. A typical Hatha class means that there will be a gentle approach to performing basic yoga postures while focusing on breath.

While you might not break a serious sweat in a class labeled “Hatha Yoga”, you will stretch and elongate your physical body while establishing a sense of peace and relaxation.

Hatha yoga is great for beginner level practitioners as it focuses on the basics of yoga and is slower paced.

What comes to mind when you think of yoga?

For many people, the word “yoga” may look like a few stretches and breathing exercises. Once you’ve become a seasoned yoga practitioner, you begin to understand that yoga is SO MUCH MORE.

Yoga can become a lifestyle and a spiritual practice. What I love most about practicing yoga through a regular practice you can develop skills and the ability to stop the mind chatter and just be.

Praised for its many benefits on the mind and body, millions of people from around the world practice yoga to promote overall wellness and inner peace. If you’re new to the practice, finding a style of yoga that fits you may be confusing, especially when you can’t easily discern the differences between the disciplines.

We’ve created a list to familiarize you with 17 major yoga disciplines being taught and practiced today in modern America and around the world. While it does not cover all the different types of yoga out there, this guide will provide a quick overview on the disciplines that are offered at most yoga studios.

What You Need For At-Home Barre

Barre workouts can definitely be done at home, but there are a few things you will need first. Some of these items you should also bring to your class if you head to a studio, while others you only need if you intend to do the workouts at home.

* Stretchy and Comfortable Clothing *

To start with, you are going to need to wear the right clothing for your barre workouts. This includes clothing in the studio or at home. When you workout at home, you have the luxury of not worrying about how you look and can just wear whatever is comfortable, even you just choose a sports bra and yoga pants. Make sure your clothing is stretchable and provides plenty of movement, preferably yoga pants or leggings. Avoid shorts since the rubbing of your legs can be uncomfortable for barre workouts. It is also good to get some ballet socks, sometimes called barre socks or yoga socks. These have sticky bottoms to keep you from slipping and sliding on the ground.

* Something to Lean On *

Many people that fall in love with barre workouts will choose a room dedicated to their ballet and dance fitness, and actually install a ballet barre on the wall. This is definitely an option available to you, but there are some other options as well. If you want a barre, but don’t have room to attach it to a wall, you can get a portable barre that works the same, but can be moved around. This is attached to a stand and is usually lightweight. Other people just use the back of a chair for their workouts, which works just fine. Just test the height so that you can reach your leg on it comfortably.

* Other Workout Tools *

Depending on the type of barre workout you do, there might be some other workout tools and accessories you will need. For one thing, many barre workout routines involve floor work, so if you are working in a room with tile or hardwood floors, you will want a yoga mat. You may also want a small exercise ball and set of light hand weights, since many of the workouts will ask for you to use them.

It is a good idea to watch through some of the videos or DVDs you are using for your at-home barre workout to find out exactly what you will need. Make a list of the equipment or accessories being used to be sure you have everything ready before your first workout.

Healthy + Easy Pūratae Deviled Eggs 🥚
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Grab your colored eggs! This recipe is quick and easy. Make a big salad to go with and this is a meal!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ingredients
12 egg yolks
1/2 cup reduced-fat Veganaise
1 level Tbsp. pūratae
Handful of fresh spinach
1 small organic lemon (use a fine grater to make zest and squeeze 2 tablespoons of lemon juice)
1 tablespoon organic yellow mustard
1/4 teaspoon Himalayan salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 large organic avocado, diced
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Combine yolks, Vegenaise, pūratae, spinach, mustard, lemon zest and juice, salt, pepper and avocado in a food processor. Blend until smooth.

Add mixture back into the eggs by spooning small amounts—or put it into a pastry bag and pipe it into the center of eggs if you’re feeling extra fancy.
