Marie Sainte Dédée Bazile, known as Défilée and Défilée-La-Folle, is a figure of the Haitian Revolution. She is remembered for retrieving and burying the mutilated body of Emperor Dessalines after his assassination at Pont Larnage.
Dédée Bazile was born a slave near Cap Française (now Cap Haïtien) and made a living serving as a sutler (selling goods and food to troops) to the army of Dessalines. Most of her life she has been known for her insanity. She was viciously r***d by her master at age 18 and was broken ever since. Even with her mental illness and reputation, she managed to continue her life, marry and have children. Decade later, she further spiraled into depression and insanity when three of her brothers and two of hers sons died in a single battle (that was lost) against General Donatien Rochambeau. After Dessalines personally comforted her following the battle, she became his biggest fan, following him around everywhere, even into battles.
On October 17, 1806, Emperor Dessalines was ambushed by his former comrades Alexandre Pétion, Jean-Pierre Boyer, André Rigaud, and Bruno Blanchet. He was fatally shot north of Port-au-Prince at Pont Larnage (now known as Pont-Rouge). His body was then brought into the city where it was stoned and mutilated by the crowds.Dédée Bazile gathered his remains in a sack and transported them to the Cimetière Intérieur to bury them.
Dédée Bazile died around 1816 and was buried in Port-au-Prince, but her grave has been lost. She was survived by her several children, including her son Colonel Condol Bazile, officer of the constabulary under the Haitian emperor Faustin Soulouque.
