A Chinese billionaire wants to make yachts affordable for ordinary buyers.

If mass-market yachts become reality, the ocean could suddenly become accessible to far more people — including divers.

But cheaper boats could also reshape the liveaboard diving industry and increase pressure on already fragile reefs.

More access to the ocean is exciting.
The real question is whether the ocean can handle it.

What do you think?

Sea&Sea has introduced a new universal underwater housing for Nikon Z mirrorless cameras — and the idea is simple: keep the housing, swap the camera.

Built on the MDX platform, the system supports multiple Nikon Z bodies including the Z5, Z6 II and Z7 II, meaning photographers may not need to replace their entire housing when upgrading cameras.

For underwater shooters, that could make future upgrades a lot less expensive.

Would a universal housing make you more likely to upgrade your camera body?

Dive liveaboards give divers access to some of the most remote reefs on Earth — from the Galápagos to Raja Ampat and the Maldives.

But operating in fragile marine ecosystems also comes with responsibility.

Many liveaboard operators are now introducing sustainability measures such as wastewater treatment systems, reef-safe mooring practices, plastic reduction initiatives, and partnerships with marine conservation projects.

These changes are helping reduce the environmental impact of dive tourism while protecting the reefs and marine life that divers travel the world to see.

A tragic diving accident in Puerto Madryn, Argentina has ended after search teams recovered the body of a diver who went missing during a training dive.

The 23-year-old diver disappeared near the Hu Shun Yu 809 wreck, a fishing vessel that was intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef dive site in Golfo Nuevo.

Authorities launched a multi-day search operation before locating her near the wreck at around 20–25 metres depth. Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the dive.

Incidents during training dives are uncommon, but the case highlights how complex wreck environments and deeper dives can quickly become dangerous when something goes wrong.

Scuba training just became easier to start for millions of potential divers in India.

PADI has released a Hindi-language version of its Open Water Diver eLearning, allowing students to complete the theory portion of the course in Hindi before doing their pool and ocean training with an instructor.

It doesn’t change the course standards — it simply removes a language barrier that has likely discouraged some new divers in the past.

As India’s dive tourism grows, this kind of change could help more domestic travellers take their first step into scuba.

A major shift in ocean conservation has just happened.

The High Seas Treaty (BBNJ) has officially entered into force after more than 60 countries ratified the agreement — creating the first international framework to protect marine life in waters beyond national borders.

That’s significant because the high seas make up nearly two-thirds of the world’s oceans, yet historically they’ve been governed by fragmented rules and limited conservation measures.

The treaty now allows countries to propose and establish marine protected areas in international waters, introduce environmental impact assessments for offshore activities, and develop shared rules around marine genetic resources.

For divers, the effects will likely be indirect but important. Healthier migration routes, protected seamount ecosystems, and better-managed offshore habitats could support the sharks, whales, and pelagic species that eventually appear in many dive destinations.

The treaty entering force is only the first step. The real impact will depend on how quickly countries move to create protected areas — and how strong those protections actually are.

Yet another dive boat fire has been reported, this time in the southern Maldives.

A dive vessel anchored outside Feydhoo harbour in Addu City caught fire and was destroyed in the blaze. Firefighters from the Maldives National Defence Force responded to the scene, but the vessel was ultimately lost and sank during firefighting efforts.

One person sustained minor burns and was treated locally before being discharged. No other injuries have been reported.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire. Local reports have mentioned a possible gas cylinder explosion, but this remains unverified while the incident is investigated.

The incident comes shortly after another dive boat fire reported last week in Hurghada, Egypt.

A technical diving event is heading to Elba Island, Italy this spring.

From 24–26 April 2026, the Elba Sidemount Festival will bring together divers for three days of guided dives, equipment testing, and workshops focused on the operational side of diving.

Hosted by Elba Diving with training platform 4FreeWorld, the program combines diving with sessions on sidemount configuration tuning, decompression thinking, gas booster safety, breathing-air quality, and equipment handling.

Participants will also have the chance to see sidemount CCR systems like the Liberty Sidemount and X-CCR Flex 2, along with opportunities to test DPVs in real diving conditions.

Evenings stay informal—with pizza, barbecue, and the kind of conversations where divers often learn the most.

The global dive industry is mourning the loss of Wayne B. Brown, CEO of Aggressor Adventures, who died earlier this week after a 19-month battle with cancer.

Brown purchased the Aggressor Fleet in 2007 and went on to transform it into one of the most recognised brands in global dive travel. Under his leadership, the company expanded far beyond its original liveaboard operations, growing into Aggressor Adventures with dive yachts, river cruises and adventure lodges across multiple destinations.

For nearly two decades, Brown played a major role in shaping the modern liveaboard sector. His focus on consistent service, brand recognition and global expansion helped position Aggressor as one of the most visible and influential names in dive travel.

Before entering the diving industry, Brown served eight years in the United States Air Force and later built a successful business career as a restaurant franchise owner. His entrepreneurial background would later shape how Aggressor grew into a global adventure travel company.

Within the diving community, Brown was known not only as a business leader but also as an active diver and instructor, holding credentials across multiple training agencies and remaining closely connected to the experiences his company offered.

He is survived by his wife Dana, their children and grandchildren.

His legacy will remain closely tied to the growth of the Aggressor brand and the broader evolution of liveaboard diving over the past two decades.

A US federal appeals court has upheld the conviction of the former captain of the dive vessel Conception, the boat lost in a devastating fire off California in 2019.

Thirty-four people died in the disaster after a fire broke out in the early hours of the morning while most passengers were asleep below deck. Investigators later found that a required overnight roving watch had not been maintained, a key factor in the criminal case.

Captain Jerry Boylan was convicted of misconduct or neglect of a ship officer and sentenced to four years in federal prison in 2024. The appeals court decision now leaves that conviction and sentence in place.

The Conception fire remains the deadliest modern maritime disaster involving recreational divers, and it continues to shape conversations around dive boat safety, night watch procedures and emergency preparedness across the liveaboard industry.

A serious fire damaged parts of Fantasy Island Beach Resort Dive & Marina in French Harbour, Roatán on the night of March 2.

According to early reports from local authorities, around 60 guests and staff were evacuated safely, and there were no reported casualties.

The fire affected a wide section of the resort’s infrastructure, including 36 guest rooms, the lobby and reception areas, restaurant and kitchen facilities, several bars, a discotheque, convention areas, and retail spaces.

The good news for divers is that the on-site dive centre appears to have escaped damage, according to preliminary information. However, even when a dive shop itself is unaffected, surrounding resort infrastructure can still impact operations, from accommodation and equipment storage to transport logistics and boat departures.

If you have an upcoming trip booked at Fantasy Island, the most practical step right now is to contact your operator or travel provider directly to confirm whether your stay is being relocated, rescheduled, or otherwise adjusted.

Roatán remains one of the Caribbean’s best-known dive destinations, offering access to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world.

As damage assessments continue and the resort evaluates reopening timelines, the situation may evolve over the coming days.

Most liveaboards operate within a +/- 20% commission structure. That’s standard. Agents and aggregators built this industry and continue to play an important role in global distribution.

But there’s a quieter conversation happening behind the scenes.

When 70–80% of bookings come through third parties, a large portion of your revenue depends on platforms you don’t control. That doesn’t mean agents are the problem. It means dependency carries risk.

This article looks at how established liveaboard operators can gradually increase direct bookings — without discount wars, without breaking rate parity and without damaging long-standing trade relationships.

We explore:

• Why commission is taken from gross, not profit, and what that means structurally
• Why reducing OTA reliance feels risky (and why that fear is rational)
• How AI-driven search and structured destination authority can generate commission-free demand
• Why value stacking protects relationships better than public discounting
• How loyalty systems and CRM segmentation reduce long-term acquisition pressure

The goal isn’t confrontation. It’s balance.

Healthy brands don’t eliminate partners. They reduce dependency on any single channel.

In a capital-intensive, weather-exposed business like liveaboards, distribution resilience is strategy.
