“Manipulating the Truth” – Honoring a Legacy of Deceit

Following our last article, community criticism of The O’Neal School began to grow — but online comments soon started disappearing, replaced by a sudden flood of glowing posts that read more like marketing copy than genuine feedback.

Then came this review on Niche.com:

“As a former employee, DO NOT believe any of the positive reviews. Before I left at the end of last year, the school’s operations head (Kathy Taylor) sent an email titled ‘Positive Reviews Needed.’ In it was a list of school review websites, and she asked all faculty and staff to post ‘positive reviews’ to turn the public image around. The positive reviews are mostly from staff members trying to save their jobs. The negative reviews are the true ones.”

We’ve now uncovered internal emails dating back to as early as 2016 exposing Kathy Taylor, Director of Communications and Facilities. She is the driving force behind a long-running campaign to fabricate reviews, suppress criticism, distort school rankings, and manipulate standardized test score averages.

“Betrayed by the Board” - Corrupt Leadership Digs in as O’Neal Falls Apart

Behind glossy ads and polished brochures, The O’Neal School is failing. Enrollment is down, teachers are leaving, and community members are speaking out while deeply rooted trustees cling to power.

On GreatSchools.org, a public site where families and educators share their experiences, a review from August 11, 2025, warned:

“As a former teacher at this school I would like to tell every parent looking at this school to run. The leadership is 100% in the pockets of the board of trustees. 90% of the teachers at this school do the bare minimum and do not care about the students. This is mainly because the pay is so low. But the pay is low because you don’t have to maintain your state teaching license. Most of the staff can’t stand the parents of the students and openly bad mouth them. If you happen to be a single parent I promise you the staff will judge you and your child for it. This is extremely common in the middle school. If your child is in the middle school and has an IEP I can promise you the principal talks poorly about your child. This is not an institution of learning. This is a business out to make money.”

"Addicted to Your Money" - Taxpayer Dollars Feeding Private School Greed

As the most expensive private school in Moore County, North Carolina, The O’Neal School charges families up to $20,990 per year for each child yet relentlessly pressures them for more. Beyond frequent tuition hikes, aggressive fundraising tactics, and hidden costs, parents are also encouraged to apply for taxpayer-funded vouchers through the North Carolina Opportunity Scholarship program. These vouchers were originally meant to help families in need but are now being used by even the wealthiest to cash in, taking advantage of public money to offset private school tuition.

Despite skyrocketing tuition and relentless fundraising, O’Neal shamelessly taps into taxpayer dollars to feed its financial greed.

“Donor Funds Enrich Board Member’s Assets”

Families, alumni, and community members have long given generously to The O’Neal School trusting that their contributions were building a brighter future for its students. But what if that money, intended solely to benefit the school, was instead increasing the value of a Board Member’s assets?

Through a series of questionable actions, key “Trustees” quietly sold half of the 40-acre campus—including land donated by the school’s founding members—to a private family. This decision, made in a desperate attempt to recover from a financial catastrophe largely caused by their own poor decision-making, was completed without the knowledge of many donors. Subsequent fundraising campaigns for pool renovations, central campus construction, and the new dining commons also failed to disclose that these improvements would enhance property no longer fully owned by the organization.

This headline article challenges supporters to reconsider what their contributions are truly funding. On August 13, 2024, while many of The O'Neal School students were attending orientation, the district attorney's office was preparing for a hearing concerning the juvenile responsible for the assault on the Stefanik family's child. By the end of the day, the assailant was labeled a juvenile delinquent with a record of assault, released on court-ordered probation, and is now, once again, participating in on-campus classes at school. "Putting Lipstick on a Pig" - Unethical Practices Continue Despite New Leadership

While the community was hopeful that the new Interim Head of The O'Neal School, Brenda Jackson, would be a catalyst for change, it seems that she is just a pawn of the Board of Trustees. Sources report that the circumstances of John Elmore's resignation were much worse than what was disclosed, but the school appears to have aided him in securing a new position of authority over children at a different private school. Mrs. Jackson has even continued the unjust policies put in place before his departure by excluding multiple child athletes from participating on another visiting swim team. These actions have not only violated the principles of The North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association, potentially jeopardizing the standing of the school, but have also exposed an unfortunate truth: O'Neal has not learned from its mistakes.
