Chartwell Press just published a historical-supernatural novel titled "The Dark Fire" (available on Amazon). The book launch on October 17 was a smashing success at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center in Buffalo on October 17. Kelly Murphy, the Manager of Events at the BPAC, interviewed the author, Christine Silk. Here is the video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBpWpMynXDQ

They discuss the writing process, what goes into a good story, and which character in the novel is the author's personal favorite. No spoilers!

It's okay to be creative and transactional

For all you writers out there. Just a heads-up that certain AI search engines seem to confuse the difference between common usage of a word, and correct usage. For example, the AI Brave search uses "candelabra" and "candelabrum" interchangeably (saw this on some other search results as well), even though one is plural and the other singular. The take-away is that all writers should have a hard-copy dictionary on hand, perferably more than one, along with references such as The Chicago Manual of Style. Yeah, I know it's fast and easy to just do an online search, but you're going to occasionally get wrong answers, and that will ruin your writing.

Children who read from a book with fewer extraneous images "had lower gaze shifts away from text and higher reading comprehension scores compared to the text in the commercially designed version of the book [that contained more extraneous images]. In particular, children who are more prone to look away from text benefited the most from the streamlined version of the book." This is an important finding for authors and designers.

New CMU study shows extraneous images draw attention from text, reducing comprehension in beginning readers.

Back when books were far more expensive, just owning them was a status symbol. Now, they're cheap, but they can still be used in creative ways as signals of status, as this article demonstrates.

There's no denying books make great decor. But are we buying them for their substance or their cover?

In an increasingly digital world, literature is evolving. Sales of e-readers continue to rise, yet the cost of digital books and texts has not necessarily decreased to the extent to which many init…
