The most interesting thing about writing is the way it obliterates time. Three hours seem like three minutes. Then there is the business of surprise. I never know what is coming next. The phrase that sounds in the head changes when it appears on the page. Then I start probing it with a pen, finding new meanings. Sometimes I burst out laughing at what is happening as I twist and turn sentences. Strange business, all in all. One never gets to the end of it. That's why I go on, I suppose. To see what the next sentences I write will be. Gore Vidal.

ADOWA

Fascination, faithful as a rock-hewn church,
compels to that past
interred in pages,
with its classic script
of fateful, lower-case lives, upper-case sentiment.
Adowa , for favoured instance,
that argument waged
to improve an insidious clause
in the cadence of empire.

Revision's light refracts the plots
encircling plots, takes me past
that schoolboy delight
in resonant Menelik, Jan Hoi, Negus Negast ,
past imperial sleight of hand, the calligraphy of conquest,
past the ultimate insult of kings.

Fascination unearths the ghosts
interred in pages:
for here are the Askari's, honorary, temporary Romans,
here is the valley of their cautionary bones,;
here is the earth fermenting with centurions,
here are the incense-swinging priests,
here is the past that should be
more than vampires metaphor.
