The Northrop F-5 wasn’t built for glory. It was born in the late 1950s as a quiet, self-funded project by Northrop, aimed at smaller U.S. allies who couldn’t afford complex jets like the F-4 Phantom. The first prototype flew in 1959 under the internal name N-156. It was fast, nimble, and brutally efficient.

The F-5A Freedom Fighter came first, followed by the upgraded F-5E Tiger II. Both were supersonic, twin-engine, and easy to fly—perfect for export. While the U.S. Air Force never adopted it as a frontline fighter, the jet became a staple in dozens of foreign air forces. At its peak, over 30 countries flew the F-5, and some still do.

It’s also had a long second life. In the U.S., it’s been used extensively as an aggressor aircraft for pilot training, simulating enemy MiGs in dogfight exercises.

Simple, deadly, and dirt-cheap to run, the F-5 proved that bigger isn’t always better. And over 60 years later, it’s still flying.
