LESEGO KGAJWANE!
Lesego Kgajwane was born in 1970 in Moshupa, the village where she did all her schooling, before the bright lights of the city started calling her name.
Growing up listening to radio when she had free time, developing love for it and admiring radio giants like Mogatusi Kwapa, drove the young Kgajwane to apply for a vacant post in the world of broadcasting at Radio Botswana (RB1) as it was then the only radio station in the country.
She often recalled how she applied for a post at RB1 years back and got rejected, but that did not pull her down as she applied again whenever there was a vacant post. After trying her luck four times, Kgajwane finally received the call she had been waiting for. She was among the four candidates hired for a post in News and Current Affairs. However, having a deep love for presenting, Kgajwane managed to convince her bosses that she was the right person to be in the Arts and Culture section as a continuity presenter — and a star was instantly born.
She was attached to Mokgankgara to co-present with, and she never ceases to appreciate the skills she acquired from him. He always gave her space and time to present as she was still a learner.
In 2001, Kgajwane muted her voice from the country's biggest microphone. She went to South Africa to pursue Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communications at North West University.She completed the course in 2003 and went back to RB1 to continue where she had left.
Around 2009, as RB1 was re-branding and introducing new slots for presenters, Kgajwane was given a morning slot called Mosalagae- slotted from 8 am until 11 am every week day. Being given a morning slot in radio only meant one thing — that this ambitious woman was making a huge impact on radio.
The talented Kgajwane was also a producer and presenter of another famous and much-loved show, 'Maokaneng', which aired every Wednesday from 1615 to 1800 hours. Maokaneng was mostly famous among the elderly as it discussed social issues that happened in life and gave people a platform to air their grievances.
Her most nerve-wracking moment was the first time she read the news bulletin. She freaked out the whole time and feared never to be called again, but to her surprise, she was called in again the very next day.
Lesego is a woman who turned rejection into motivation, who transformed her love for radio into national impact, and whose energy, laughter, and warmth became a daily comfort for thousands. Her voice will forever be a voice that shaped Botswana.
