The history of the women’s mile is over 100 years in the making.
It started in 1921, when Elizabeth Atkinson clocked 6:13.2 in Manchester.

By 1932, Ruth Christmas had broken 6 minutes with a 5:27.5.

In 1953, Romania’s Edith Treybal ran 5:00.03, just shy of a major barrier.

One year later, Diane Leather smashed through it with a 4:59.6.
She would go on to drop her time to 4:45.0.

In 1967, the IAAF finally made it official, awarding Anne Smith the first women’s mile world record at 4:37.0.

By 2019, that number had fallen to 4:12.33.

Today, Faith Kipyegon holds the record at 4:07.64.

On 26 June, she will attempt to do the impossible — become the first woman to break 4 minutes for the mile at Nike’s Breaking4.

Nike just unveiled the FlyWeb Bra, a first-of-its-kind innovation built specifically for Faith Kipyegon’s Breaking4 mile attempt.

Crafted using 3D-printed TPU instead of traditional textiles, the FlyWeb Bra is lightweight, breathable and built to move. It’s the result of Nike’s end-to-end innovation, combining computational design with athlete-first thinking.

“I would say I spent 80% of that training block in the Mizuno—so much of it!” — Tess Marks on preparing for her PR at Melbourne Marathon 2024

The Neo Vista has become a cult favourite among many runners in the supertrainer category. It offers excellent protection over long runs while still letting you pick up the pace when needed. In its second iteration, it features a welcome upgrade with Mizuno’s nitrogen-infused Enerzy NXT foam in the midsole.

“You get more guts underneath your foot and the shoe feels more substantial without actually increasing in weight, which is pretty significant”
 – Sam Zielonka, Product Manager, Mizuno

Andy Buchanan has quickly become one of Australia’s most exciting marathoners—balancing elite racing with part-time teaching and running his own running store in Bendigo.

In 2024, he broke through with a win at Gold Coast, got a late call-up to the Olympics, and then ran 2:06:22 in Valencia—breaking the Australian marathon record.

His recent race in London didn’t quite go to script, but as Andy says, “The marathon always wins—and you’ve got to respect it.”

The 45th running of the London Marathon took place last night, and we witnessed dominant performances from Sebastian Sawe (2:02:27) and Tigst Assefa (2:15:50 — a new world record!).

But beyond the incredible racing, it begs the question: has the London Marathon officially become the peak of global running culture?

This weekend, London truly turned it on. Some of the most well-executed brand activations we’ve seen took place across the city — from New Balance’s immersive Townhouse experience, to Bandit’s London pop-up and exclusive collection, to On Running’s shakeout runs and pop-up café, and Puma’s athlete panels and community events. Everywhere you looked, there were shakeouts, collaborations, limited drops, and innovative pop-up stores celebrating every corner of the sport.

Long gone are the days where major title sponsors had a monopoly on marathon-related merchandise. Now, every brand is coming to the party, each trying to outdo the next with something new and exciting at every Major Marathon. London 2025 showed us that the race is no longer just about the course — it’s about the culture, the community, and the full experience.

The real question is: have we peaked... or is this just the beginning?
