Eight songs, finally on a medium that Thomas Edison would have been able to listen to.*
We've just about got things together for the release of the next new Austerity Program record. But first, we're putting out an old favorite on vinyl for the first time.
Black Madonna first came out on Hydra Head in 2007. I was an out-of-the-moment record even when it was released. Which means, nearly two decades later, that it doesn't sound dated at all. We've listened to it a lot in the past year or so it holds up. The trends that swept America in the later half of the '00s - ballet flats, American Idol, Webkinz - didn't seem to have seeped into this record.
Instead, you can hear us find our footing. We went for the jugular in a way that was mostly absent from Terra Nova, and we were also trying strange stuff. Black Madonna has our longest song, our shortest song (nearly), leitmotifs** that pop up throughout the record, and even a triumphant song-ending riff in a major key. Shocking.
This re-release was one of the last vinyl records that John Golden mastered before he retired. We're happy that it's in the world in our favorite format.
* yes, we are aware that he did not have a stereo phonograph
