I finally got the Wltoys 244016.
It’s a clone of Losi Micro-B so my hope was high. Unfortunately, my hope was shattered immediately when I pulled the throttle for the first time. It can’t do slow speed, the throttle doesn’t follow my command. It’d ramp up the speed by itself because the gearbox is binding really badly. The servo horn is short, so the turning circle is really large, over 1m… if it turns at all. Plastic chassis and spring shocks don’t bother me though.
But it was undriveable to the point that I was questioning whether it is a clone of a bad design or is it just a bad clone. So, I bought a real Losi Mico-B just to compare, and the difference is night and day. (Thanks to banggood for sending me the WLtoys so I have funding left to buy Losi.)
While I was waiting for the Losi to arrive, I put more time into WLtoys, 2 more charges to be precise, and it got a lot better. The gearbox now is freed up and doesn’t bind anymore. The differential is now working properly (although still notchy) but the car now turns properly.
By the way, the ESC combo uses a new protocol and it’s not compatible with Multiprotocol. The throttle range is bad. It starts at Sonic the Hedgehog and goes to escape velocity with little to no modulation. I don’t understand why don’t they continue to use the one from 284010. That one has good throttle control. And I don't think you really need a gyro when the car understeers this much.
Anyway, I’m still putting together a video so here’s a short summary:
It’s half the price of Losi for a reason; plastic chassis, binding drivetrain, spring shocks, bad ESC. However, if you are looking to modify it anyway then this is a good place to start because… well… it’s half the price. If you only want a good out of the box experience, just buy a real one.
