A menopause 3 minutes on hormone terminology (small mistake, most hormones are made by semi synthesis from soybeans, not yams)

Natural = found in nature. Only Premarin is natural

We don’t typically use the term natural when describing estradiol or progesterone, unless we mean it has come from human ovaries or another animal’s ovaries. So in your body it’s your natural estradiol, in a prescription it’s just estradiol. Estradiol can’t be synthetic because it’s estradiol!

Semi-synthesis is how all other hormones are made (from soybeans). Hormones can also be made by synthesis, which means assembling them from small molecules.

Synthetic means a hormone not found in nature. They are usually tweaked in a lab to give them special properties. It doesn’t mean bad or a Frankenhormone! For some women, a progestin (which is synthetic) will be superior. Progestins are more portent at suppressing the endometrium, so they are better at preventing endometrial cancer. They tend not to be sedating like progesterone. And they can be used transdermally in the right formulation. But observational studies tell us they may have a higher risk of breast cancer than progesterone. This is where individualization comes in. We believe starting with progesterone is best on average based on observational studies, but there are absolutely times when a progestin (a synthetic hormone) is the better option for an individual patient.

What is most important from is how these hormones perform in clinical settings (the real world), not whether they are natural or synthetic or made by semi-synthesis. Also, people confuse natural with phytoestrogens and the world natural has been co-opted to mean safety, and that is not the case.

I love biochemical terminology and wanted to share!

There are three big reasons I find it problematic when clinicians and influencers sell supplements

1) Often there is a lot of fear based content from these accounts. I can only assume this is because fear generates more traffic and helps get visitors to their websites for a potential sale.

2) Most menopause specific products are based on pretty dismal research, like rat studies and cherry picked data. I don’t want to get my information from someone who thinks this is ok.

3) When there is evidence for a supplement, why not send someone to a low cost, third party verified product? If you want to really help women why are you up charging them? And of course, be suspicious when their products don’t have a label showing they have been independently verified by a third party

I should really be paying these wise and well ladies rent 😂 wise_and_well_ (I can’t actually tag them). How absurd and childish. I bet they felt super cool getting that photo of me and making their infographic.

A lot of things are awful right now, so please enjoy this brief respite of my tiny, one-eyed cat Luna stealing bacon from a plate. She is 5 lbs and hunted that sucker down!

It’s actually turkey bacon. Will she eat any cat food with poultry? No, not at all. She will only eat salmon or tuna thank you very much. Chunks, never pâté! Perish the thought!

Consistently for the win!

In August I committed to running 20 minutes three times a week.

I just focused on consistency. There were days when I definitely didn’t feel like going, and on those days I said fine. You just have to do 20 minutes. But overtime I was able to tell myself OK you don’t feel like going but just do 22 minutes or just do 24 minutes or just go for 20 but try to go a bit faster.

I kept at it through travel and since the beginning of August, I have missed three runs. Which I think is really pretty good. And today I ran 4 miles despite the rain and wind trying to blow me over towards the end…and I’m feeling really stoked about that. If you had told me back at the beginning of August that I’d be able to run 4 miles in six months I would’ve rolled my eyes and said never. But that’s the power of consistency!
