We met a lady in Portugal who we ended up having dinner with one night and she was so shocked to hear that I had lived in Hong Kong for a year and had travelled through many countries in East Asia. She was asking how I wasn’t scared being there alone, not knowing the language. When I said I’m now living in Geneva where I also don’t really speak the language, she somehow found that less scary. But what’s so scary about people having different cultures, norms, appearances, etc? Isn’t that the beauty of humanity? I wish we would stop thinking ‘foreign’ is scary and somehow threatening to our own identity.
