Pittsfield makes it into Vanity Fair!

Founded in 1898, Miss Hall’s School appears to be a cocoon of safety. But for decades, an alleged sexual predator operated on campus. Alumnae are speaking out in hopes of holding their former teacher—and the school—accountable.

The Berkshire Eagle's Clarence Fanto conducted a great interview with me regarding my new book, "WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU: Listening to George Harrison."

Seth Rogovoy, a longtime music journalist and author, discovered that the “Quiet Beatle” was essential to the group’s fame and success.

Ordinarily I write for The Forward, but this time out they are running an interview with me about my new George Harrison book, "Within You Without You: Listening to George Harrison."

"George Harrison, whose tenure with the Beatles was often colored with a kind of reluctance, is, for Rogovoy, the ultimate underdog, with contributions that are undersung both in terms of the band’s discography and for popular music as a whole. Though Harrison is often called the quiet or the spiritual Beatle, Rogovoy’s survey goes beyond that label, positioning Harrison as the most narratively inventive of the quartet, and, perhaps, the one responsible for much of what we consider the group’s sound. (And, in this age of streaming he never lived to see, it’s two George songs, “Here Comes the Sun,” followed by “Something,” that are the most streamed songs in the Beatles catalog.)"

"Within You WIthout You: Listening to George Harrison" by Seth Rogovoy takes a closer look at the lead guitarist's contributions.

I had the great pleasure of sitting down with ace journalist Bill Shein for a leisurely conversation about "Within You Without You." It was the kind of interviews writers dream about, with thoughtful questions and talking points from an interlocutor who obviously put a lot of time and effort into preparing for the podcast. He even read the book! I hope you all enjoy. (There's also a complete transcript if you prefer to read than to listen.)

"Within You, Without You: Listening to George Harrison" is a deep, passionate dive into the music of the so-called "Quiet Beatle."

Another rave review, this one from the Wall Street Journal: “In WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU Seth Rogovoy guides us through [George] Harrison’s career. ... Mr. Rogovoy is a keen listener with a knack for rendering musical details in plain language. Here he sheds new light on old favorites and brings forgotten gems out of the shadows.”

Harrison’s songwriting was shaped by his talent as an arranger and collaborator, which sometimes masked his singular genius.

First review is an EPIC RAVE! From Kenneth Womack in Salon:
“When it comes to the so-called Quiet Beatle, author Seth Rogovoy’s WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU accomplishes a rare feat. In a sea of ineffectual biographies devoted to the Beatles’ guitarist, Rogovoy makes a case for Harrison’s most important contribution: the music itself . . . Rogovoy’s eye towards soberly capturing the history of the Beatles with a welcome dose of critical objectivity makes WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU required reading when it comes to the guitarist. It’s that good.”

Seth Rogovoy’s "Within You Without You" sheds new light on George Harrison’s pivotal contributions to The Beatles.

RIP Maggie Smith. Among her many accomplishments, Smith made a number of films for George Harrison's production company, Handmade Films, in the 1980s, including "The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne," "A Private Function," and "The Missionary." I explore Harrison's career in film in great detail in my new book, "Within You Without You: Listening to George Harrison."

In a career that began in the 1950s, her roles ranged from Desdemona to Miss Jean Brodie, Virginia Woolf and Minerva McGonagall
