It is wonderful to enjoy Arizona.
I’m not sure what you’ve got planned for 2023 but if you’re anything like me, rambling all over Arizona will be high on your list of priorities. It doesn’t take much to get me out the door. Just about anything can inspire a journey. So I wrote up a list of 10 great reasons for a road trip in 2023, and here you go. They can be something small, like the fact that the Velvet Elvis in Patagonia moved their fabulous pizzas across the town park into a beautiful new building and I wanted to check it out. Or maybe because there’s a beautiful copper art museum in Clarkdale worth visiting. Or a chance to stargaze at Lowell Observatory. You can drive a dirt road in Organ Pipe, run up the stairs in Bisbee, or chow down on a burger amid the wild clutter of Lutes Casino in Yuma, which also happens to be Arizona’s longest operating pool hall.
And here’s a very special reason to make a road trip. June 30, 2023 will mark 10 years since the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots perished while fighting a fire in Yarnell. So why not pay your respects to these fallen heroes with a visit to the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial Park. There are hiking trails with commemorative plaques. And being at the fatality site is a profoundly moving experience. But even for those who can’t hike, stop by the parking area for the signs, photos, and a lovely bronze sculpture. Just take those few minutes to pay your respects and show that these men aren’t forgotten. And I know it sounds like a solemn outing but trust me, your heart will feel lighter afterward. I’m not sure why but that’s how it is. Sadness followed by a sense of peace. Focus on the scenic beauty. Go with an appreciation of what the hotshots were fighting to protect. Make your visit a celebration of their lives, even as you mourn their passing.
