NORTHERN LIGHTS AGAIN TONIGHT - There's another chance to *possibly* see the northern lights tonight.
The problem is the Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) will create the highest levels between now and late afternoon - which is daylight for us here in Indiana. Levels may drop off once the sunsets - but forecasts look to keep us potentially high enough for the possibility of seeing another show - if not with the naked eye, with a camera.
Best opportunity would likely be just after sunset tonight. You will have more success if you are away from any light pollution.
Make sure to use long exposure on your phone when taking pictures, as that will give you the highest quality and best chance of seeing the northern lights.
Here's some tips on how to shoot night photos on your phone:
Find a stable surface: Place your iPhone on a tripod or other stable surface to prevent blur from camera shake.
Turn off the flash: Go into your camera settings and make sure the flash is completely off.
Enable Night mode: In low light, Night mode should activate automatically. If not, tap the moon icon that appears in the top left corner.
Adjust exposure time: Tap the arrow at the top of the screen to open the settings menu, then select the yellow moon icon. Drag the slider to the right to increase the exposure time. The maximum is 10 seconds handheld or 30 seconds on a tripod.
Keep it steady: Hold your phone as still as possible or use a tripod and a timer or Apple Watch to trigger the shot to avoid any motion blur.
Use the 1x lens: The default 1x lens captures the most light and the widest field of view, so avoid zooming.
Focus on infinity: Tap the sky to help the camera focus on distant objects like stars.
