The Friends Of CC Music Constitutional Convention is taking place right now online. They're about four or five points into their agenda, which you can find at the attached link. For the Creative Commons curious to those who know the space well, particularly those into CC licensed music and the artists and curators that embrace these licenses as a way to share their work.

We are four days away from the Friends of CC Music Constitutional Convention, an online event that should be of interest to those curious about Creative Commons licensed music, netlabels, and ways in which to encourage further advocacy of the artists that share their works via free sharing licenses. The news of Nikki Giovanni making her transition from this life hit me hard. Thankfully, her defiant spirit lives on in her audio recordings and captured public appearances. Her words and her voice are the oratorical armor that I need right now.

Amidst the dizzying volume of files that one can sift through at the Free Music Archive, there's about 30 minutes or more of the legendary poet reading from her work and thinking out loud at Clark College. (Shout out to KBOO for sharing these recordings with the masses via the FMA at least 15 years ago.) I included her poem "In The Spirit Of Martin" from this collection on show no. 178 of my podcast last year and I'm sure to include another for the next episode in loving memory of her brilliant mind and incredible life.

Most of my waking moments are spent thinking about music appreciation, sonic curation, and media preservation: not only as separate concepts, but also regarding how they intersect. I recently came to the realization that it's awfully strange that I don't talk about these things more often on the show. And then some odd occurrences in the world of music, podcasting, and online archiving took place over the past month. Suddenly, I had the perfect excuse to express some observations and concerns about it all while sharing some Creative Commons selections with the listeners.

Topics include: Spotify removing over 500 podcast episodes due to music (and the podsafe ones weren't excluded from this), my media colleague Manny Faces reporting on the sudden disappearance of the Datpiff hip-hop mixtape archive, and the Internet archive experiencing a cyberattack. Featured music includes some ocean floor deep techno from King Britt (under his Scuba moniker), introspective hip-hop from A. Billi Free & Uncle El, the jazz-flavored electronica of Lavoura, the left-of-center pop grooves of Wizard Of Loneliness, and a brooding downtempo cut from Coldreavers.

"It's the quiet ones you have to watch out for..."

I keep forgetting that I recorded a Halloween mix almost 15 years ago. This dates back to 2010 and was recorded for the Phuture Frequency website, an excellent source for drum and bass mixes that is no longer in existence. (It was also home to Motion Radio, which played host to my freeform Us & Us mix series). Shout out to producer Guy Andrews, who talked me into recording this mix for the site. Left to my own devices, I wouldn't have done this, but I clearly needed to get this out of my system at the time. I listened to it again yesterday on my way home from work and I still stand by it.

Just under an hour, the mood shifts from silly to sinister pretty fast. Expect soundtracks, sound effects, hip-hop, modern classical, drum and bass, experimental electronic works, and however you'd classify John's Zorn Naked City. Artists in the mix include Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream, Frank Zappa, Antipop Consortium, Tricky Vs The Gravediggaz, Tall Black Guy, Akufen, Rubberoom, Birdy Nam Nam, and more.

It's probably not the best idea to listen to this one at work.
