Transferred from a cassette Charlie sent to his parents, tape 2 of 2 from December 1977. Transition effects added to bridge silence gaps where the mic went off.

I hope you enjoy this slice of history. Let us know what parts you remember or if you know any of the callers from this day.

Fresh from the archives! Charlie Tuna (Dad to us) as the one-man-band disc jockey. He loved to be in control of it all. He had help from Producers and interns at some stations, but his show prep, hard work, and timing was legendary and always amazed me.

Edit: Dave Skylar reports this is the new KHJ combo studio from about 1977. I don’t have a photo credit on these loose slides as they didn’t have any logo or imprint. Let me know who might have shot these, if anyone recalls.

Life is a rollercoaster. Since diving into family archives, the amount of memories found can be overwhelming.

Just uncovered a final draft script of the movie “Rollercoaster” and some of Charlie Tuna’s lines called out as M.C.; preserved and annotated by his mother whose archives contain a comprehensive snapshot at most major events from his time on earth.

Found in the archives:
Seeking help from anyone who may know where to find "Christ and Rock and Roll" documentary hosted by Charlie Tuna—audio or video(?)—mentioned in this news clipping caption with Pop Staples. Not sure if we have any Alan/Tuna recordings until we dig more into the archives.

Personal aside:
Alan/Tuna Productions was a prickly topic I recall Dad talking about—a big lesson to me to be cautious who you trust in business and life. 'Nuff said.

Found this gem in the archives. Flashback and thank you to those who have served in the Armed Forces. This CD is narrated by Charlie Tuna (Dad to us) for the Air Force 50th anniversary. Over 6,000 of his shows went out to the troops overseas from 1970-1995. We love reading every message and email from service personnel he entertained during that time.

When we remodeled the house in 1980, he got his own studio, so he was home (but working) more than ever. As a kid, I loved hearing him craft his shows and, sometimes, I interrupted him for a silly question, to say hi, or to marvel at him in his element.

Watching the open reel tapes turn while he sped through marking and splicing tape was a master class in editing.
I can finally confess this: I secretly took tape scraps from his waste basket and spliced them together to make my own tapes to practice recording and cutting when he wasn't looking. I had to record the position of all nobs and faders and learn what each did so I didn't screw up his sound and so I could return it exactly as I found it. More to come on this topic...

Although he had two doors between us and the studio in back, hearing the AFRTS outro music fade always meant he was done, the mic was off (for now), and we could make noise in the house again.

Thanks for listening and taking a stroll down memory lane with me. ❤️

KLAC to KBIG!
Before Dad (Charlie) had his own computer, we typed all his emails for him. Here’s a short one he wrote that likely went out to his email list back in the day.

If you only knew the time he put into writing out all his emails and memos and letters longhand—it showed me just how much he adored his fans.

9+ years later, I got the courage to visit Dad's storage unit of memories and mementos. If this video interests you and you'd like to see more, please comment to let us know, and we'll keep digging and posting updates.

From the family archives:

Charlie was the announcer for the 1980s late night show "Thicke of the Night" hosted by Alan Thicke.

During the show's run, Muhammad Ali appeared as a guest and Charlie asked him to sign an autograph. Ali dropped a hello and a bit of wisdom to his dad, Wiley, who was a renowned boxer in his own right in his younger years.

KHTZ (KHITS) fans!
This 1982 gem resurfaced in the garage this morning. How many of Dad’s fans received one of these? Share yours if you have one still.

Hearing him read the Morning Wake-Up Story always made me laugh.
