I have watched new houses, cars, and storefronts grow more alike for years, and I keep wondering when we agreed that this was enough. A home can be affordable and still deserve character. A useful object can give us something to enjoy looking at.

In “We Are Forgetting What Beauty Looks Like,” I explore what happens when our surroundings teach us to expect less. Have you noticed it where you live, too? Read the article and tell me what you wish we would bring back.

What happens when a culture teaches us to expect less—and calls it progress?

What’s Really in Pet Food? One Advocate’s 30-Year Search

The words on a pet food bag don't always mean what you think they mean. Terms like “chicken” and phrases like “comes from USDA facilities” can sound reassuring while saying very little about the quality of what's inside. Here is what one pet owner learned in more than 30 years of asking questions, and how her experience can help you read labels and judge manufacturers with clearer eyes....

Natural disasters expose systems we normally never see.

For Susan Thixton, Hurricane Florence raised a question that went far beyond the storm itself: what happens to massive numbers of animal carcasses after the cameras leave and the cleanup begins?

Following that trail took her into rendering, disposal, and an uncomfortable part of the food chain most consumers never encounter.

This clip is only one piece of a much larger story.

What happens when the food system has a waste problem?

Susan Thixton’s years of research eventually led her beyond labels and ingredients into a much larger question about disposal, economics, and where unwanted material goes.

That is where one of the most disturbing phrases from our conversation came from: “living landfills.”

Once you understand the context behind those words, they are hard to forget.

There is a world between what consumers imagine is in pet food and what regulations may actually allow.

Susan Thixton has spent decades learning where that gap exists and how carefully chosen language can keep most pet owners from ever noticing it.

The deeper question is not simply what is in the food.

It is whether the consumer would make the same choice if they knew the full story behind the ingredient.

That is where Susan’s work gets uncomfortable.

Most of us assume that if a familiar word appears on a label, we know what it means.

But what if the definition changes depending on who the food is intended for?

Susan Thixton learned that some of the most important truths about pet food are hidden not in what is missing from the label, but in how ordinary words are legally defined.

Once you understand that, the whole package starts to look different.

Sometimes one question changes the direction of an entire life.

Susan Thixton’s search for answers began with a devastating loss, but what she uncovered afterward pulled her into a world most pet owners never see: hidden definitions, regulatory loopholes, industry meetings, and years of asking questions no one seemed eager to answer.

This clip is where that journey begins.

Stewardship of the Earth: A Sacred Responsibility

There is something sacred about the Earth beneath our feet because it is part of God’s creation. The forests, mountains, rivers, oceans, animals, soil, and even the smallest living things exist within an intricate world of order, purpose, and interdependence. Creation surrounds us with reminders of God’s provision and creativity, from the changing seasons to the remarkable transformation of a seed placed in the soil into something capable of sustaining life....

One day, we will all be gone.

But something of us will remain in the condition of the world we hand to those who follow.

It will remain in the soil we nourished or exhausted, the water we protected or polluted, the resources we preserved or depleted, and the places we restored—or chose to destroy.

Our legacy is not only what we build and leave behind.
It is also the condition in which we leave God’s creation.

One day, the Earth itself will bear witness to how faithfully we honored what was placed in our hands.

Human beings have developed an extraordinary ability to alter the world around us.

But there is an important distinction we rarely discuss:

Being able to do something does not mean we possess the wisdom—or the moral authority—to do it.

That becomes particularly important when we interfere with weather and other natural systems whose complexity extends far beyond our understanding or control.

Technology can answer the question, “Can we?”

Stewardship requires us to also ask, “Should we?”
