Representation in Media: Why Authenticity Matters | As someone who deeply values inclusion and representation, I’ve been reflecting on a recent portrayal of a trans woman character in Squid Game Season 2. While it’s encouraging to see a trans character included in such a globally renowned series, I couldn’t help but feel conflicted upon learning that the role was played by a cis male actor.
This raises important questions about authentic representation in media. Casting decisions like this can be problematic for several reasons:
1. Representation Matters: Authentic representation allows trans actors to bring their lived experiences to the screen, resulting in nuanced and truthful portrayals. It also opens doors for trans performers, who are often underrepresented or misrepresented in the entertainment industry.
2. The Impact of Miscasting: When a cis male actor plays a trans woman, it can perpetuate harmful stereotypes, such as conflating being transgender with “pretending” or “dressing up.” This risks reinforcing prejudice and misunderstanding.
3. Barriers in Certain Societies: In places like South Korea, where LGBTQ+ acceptance is still evolving, the lack of openly trans or gay actors reflects broader societal challenges. This systemic issue highlights the need for advocacy and change.
While I commend the inclusion of a trans character—an important step forward—I believe it would have been far more impactful and inclusive to cast a trans actor in the role. Such a decision would challenge societal norms, normalize trans representation in media, and provide much-needed opportunities to trans performers.
That said, I recognize the complexities of the South Korean entertainment industry, where LGBTQ+ representation is just beginning to emerge. There are close to no actors [who] are openly trans, let alone openly gay, because unfortunately in Korean society the LGBTQ+ community is still marginalised and more neglected, which is heart-breaking.
This situation underscores the importance of amplifying LGBTQ+ voices, encouraging the casting of trans talent, and supporting aspiring trans performers.
Global audiences now expect more from the media they consume. Authentic representation is not just a creative choice—it’s a moral imperative.
What are your thoughts on how we can foster greater awareness and inclusion in media, especially in societies where representation is still emerging?
