Today (6 June) is my birthday.

Every year on this day, the first person I’d speak to would be my mum.

Firstly, because it’s my mum. Secondly, because it’s her birthday on the same day.

How special and unique that is: My Gemini Twin. My soulmate. My mami.

“You’re my gift from life,” mum would always say.

But today when I woke up, there were no messages from mama. No phone calls. No the usual joyful singing and jubilation, or us celebrating for 4 weeks straight.

It’s the third year I’m celebrating our special day alone, mama, and marking this day feels unnatural and plain.

You would have been 60 today, mami. I can’t believe I’m 37 now.

Mami, your Bambi is all grown up. But even though I’m 37 today, I still feel like your little baby.

I miss you calling me Bambi, calling me farasheh, wardeh and Didi. I miss you.

I will miss you every birthday. Every day. Every hour, minute and second.

But you liked my smile, my singing voice and my jokes, so, I will try and paint my face with a warm smile while thinking of you. I’ll sing your favourite songs in the sunshine and rain. And I’ll keep that sense of humour that I inherited from you.

I love you, mama, with every breath I take, every heartbeat and every blink of my eyes.
