🌤️ Happy Sunday!

We’re settling into a fairly quiet weather pattern over the next few days as high pressure dominates. Does that mean we’re completely rain-free? Not quite… an isolated popup shower or storm is possible each day, but with only about a 10% chance, most areas will stay dry. Farmers, this is a great time to get some hay done!

⛅ Forecast Overview
• Today (Sunday) – Tuesday: Mostly sunny skies, highs in the mid 90s.
• Heat Alert: A HEAT ADVISORY is in effect for Bedford and Moore Counties Monday & Tuesday, with heat index values likely topping 105°. Coffee County is just missing the advisory thanks to the Highland Rim keeping things a touch cooler, but it’ll still be very hot.
• Wednesday – Saturday: The high pressure dome weakens, allowing scattered thunderstorms back into the forecast. Rain chances increase to 40–60% each afternoon/evening.

🌴 Tropics: Things remain quiet for now, but I’ll be watching closely over the next few weeks as the heart of hurricane season approaches.

Daybreak on this Saturday reveals a rapidly intensifying Category 4 Hurricane Erin in the central Atlantic. At 4 PM yesterday, Erin was a minimal hurricane with 75 mph sustained winds. In only ~16 hours, the cyclone has undergone explosive intensification, now packing 145 mph sustained winds with higher gusts. That’s a 70 mph increase in less than a day, meeting the criteria for rapid intensification several times over.

🔎 Structure & Dynamics: Satellite presentation shows a well-defined, symmetric CDO (central dense overcast) with extremely cold cloud tops and a clear warming eye emerging on IR imagery. This evolution is being driven by very low shear, high oceanic heat content, and excellent outflow channels aloft, which are essential ingredients for rapid deepening.

🌀 Steering Environment: A strong subtropical ridge remains anchored over the western Atlantic, but model guidance suggests a weakness developing in the ridge that will allow Erin to turn north, then northeast. This will effectively recurve the system well away from the U.S. mainland.

🌧️ Impacts to land: Although the core of Erin will stay offshore, outer rainbands are still affecting the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico with squally weather and occasional gusts. Longer-term impacts may include increased swells and rip currents across the western Atlantic basin.
