It’s always been a dream of mine to sit with a musician and go through one of their projects together in depth. I love talking art, and I think music is such a tool for discussions surrounding identity, culture and our understanding of humanity.

What piece of music are you meditating on right now?

T-2 days until our season finale! 🎶

Journalist Katie Toth has been working on a project that links together multiple elements of her personal life and the world at large as we see it today. It's a journey that started with her move to Canada's subarctic, and it's a perspective that is easily missed. For so many, everything changed when Russia invaded Ukraine. It also shifted what is happening in the far North. We'll learn more about this unique "Cold Front" Toth has unravelled, and explore identity and geopolitics in this special episode.

This FRIDAY:

Katie Toth’s handprint can be found in a lot of places: NPR, VICE, CBC, even Teen Vogue - and more literally - Toronto, New York City, and Canada’s subarctic.

But the journalist’s latest work (a miniseries called “Cold Front” on PRX as part of the “Things That Go Boom” podcast) explores a world we too often forget. It’s a world with marked significance in international relations and one which holds major keys to climate change: the Arctic.

She joins me to discuss her project, her time integrating into Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and the implications that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have in the far North. It’s a special listen, and I hope you’ll tune in at the end of the week! 🐻‍❄️ 🌏

Expressing who you are through what and how you create is not necessarily a natural skill. São Paolo guests, Inès Schinazi and Dani Afonso, however, have it down to a science. The life and business partners are the creators of the Brazilian podcast drama series, "Chloé & Valentina," which they made, in part, for the sake of the female-led narrative. But who they really are runs deeper.

Join us as we explore what being "100% Brazilian" means, how a hyphenated identity can be challenging, and what life is like in the Southern hemisphere.

Culture is a subjective term. In fact, it’s meant to be - since its very purpose is to help define what makes us unique as humans. So then…what exactly is it?

I love asking people to share what their “cultural identity” is on my show because it opens them up to a self interpretation that is always specific to them. It shows us so much about someone.

I can’t wait to share the story of + (.dreams) coming up on Friday. We explore so much of this thought together.

Let me know your thoughts below.

"Sinon, je chante et je joue du piano," ("Besides that, I sing and play piano") reads Beatrice Martin's Instagram bio. This is a true reflection of her humility; especially when held up against internationally sold-out shows, a six-album career, and a legendary presence on almost all social media platforms for over a decade.

Best known as Coeur de Pirate, she's French, she's Canadian, she's a pop star, she's q***r, she's a mom, she's acquired a company...and yes, she sings and plays piano, too. It is impossible to put Martin in a box with all of these identifiers and colours to her shining star quality. She joins us to talk about it this week on a special episode of anticulture.

Since starting anticulture in 2017, I’ve witnessed our collective mentality shift in profound ways, often prompted by pain and fear.

It has always been my hope as a journalist to bring back light and love by giving a platform for stories that bring us to a space of intentional listening. This is particularly impactful when we get to listen to someone outside of our usual groupings.

While prepping this week’s special AMA episode, I reflected on the many stories this show has brought to the surface and I felt grateful. The world is complex, but we’re here in it together.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate this weekend! It’s a beautiful time, indeed.

For those who missed the news, I will be moving across Canada to add some reporting mojo to the roster over at CBC Windsor starting early 2022 🇨🇦

I am feeling grateful and ready for this next step in my career and I’ll have a special episode of anticulture for you on January 7th to share some more details.

I am still hoping to round off the season and continue the show for those asking, and I’m excited to bring my voice to a wider platform that represents all that I love about Canada.

Thank you to everyone who’s helped me on this journey. I couldn’t have done it without the listeners, the folks at Alberta Podcast Network who helped give the show a platform, We Edit Podcasts for helping produce my most pivotal episodes, the recognition from The Canadian Podcast Awards and the design and know-how of Arcade Studios. I could never do this alone.

Talk to you soon, and Merry Christmas!
Josiah

We’re (nearly) halfway through the fifth season of anticulture…um, wow!

I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to everyone who has listened to the show this season and beyond. I hope what you take away each week is a new perspective on the world at our fingertips!

Earlier this weekend, I got to sit down and chat on a podcast for TEDxYYC (which will be coming out soon!) and I dove deep into why I chose to pursue anticulture. I got to share about the pros and cons of being “culturally ambiguous,” (i.e. mixed-race, not obviously “seen”)…which I haven’t really considered before, although I’ve introduced myself this way every season.

Far beyond (and apart from) from race, I found a strange tension as I spoke when I considered all of the labelling that’s been wrongfully applied to me throughout my life, and the consistent “duck out of water” feeling I have felt, particularly as a child. On the other hand, however, my coping mechanism for feeling unsure of myself appeared in the form of becoming very social and intentional with the world around me. I realized that because I’m hard to box in by nature, many people from many walks of life would share honest thoughts with me about their own feelings of not belonging. We’d get to take our discussions a step further - and I think that has something to do with how I don’t fit into a “category” as most people typically would. My openness to these conversations also translated into my adaptability while living in new places, and has formed a very empathetic nature within me. I think people can pick up on that, and I am so grateful for it.

How do you navigate the labels the world has put on you? Do you feel misunderstood? How has it become your strength?

Finding a good story is sometimes a difficult task, but I’ve learned there’s always a gem to be found when you’re talking to someone candidly.

I like to let my guests speak from the heart, and in order to nurture that experience, I have to generate trust, comfort and intentional questions that show them I’m watching and listening.

When the groundwork is set, the rest is history. Everyone has a story to tell and some of the most compelling story leads come from people speaking from their heart.

We all live different lives from one another - especially from those who we wouldn’t normally relate to. That’s the joy of being human. We all experience different realities so that we can share our lessons with one another.

I’m honoured to share those stories with you so you can tune in and share the gems with me.

See you on Friday!

FRIDAY on anticulture, we’re catching up with the national television host of CBC News “Canada Tonight with Ginella Massa” 🎉

In 2015, Ginella Massa became Canada’s first television news anchor to wear a hijab. Many believe she is possibly the first in North America.

But—don’t be so quick to conclude her cultural story there. There is so much more to Massa’s history and identity, including her lesser spoken of Afro-Latina heritage.

Subscribe to the show wherever you get your podcasts so you don’t miss our one-on-one chat about the nuances of her journey, what it’s like to host a national program, and what cultural identity really means.

Tonight was such a special evening, gathering with some of Calgary’s best to watch the screening premiere of “Love: The Last Chapter” from filmmaker Dominique Keller.

We had the honour of interviewing Keller about her film; an intricate, “fly-on-the-wall” observational piece about love at a senior’s lodge. It is perhaps one of the most intriguing and compelling observational documentaries I’ve seen yet.

The audience was boisterous—we laughed, cried, and thought about a chapter many of us like to push to the side. We also got to meet the stars of the show ✨

Tune into anticulture on Friday to hear our chat with Keller as we dive into the “culture” of our elderly.

Keller’s film is available for streaming on the CUFF website until November 28th. It is a must-see!

Thank you to Calgary Underground Film Festival, NFB, YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) , and CBC Calgary for bringing together a wonderful evening at The Globe Cinema for the feature premiere of “Love: The Last Chapter” as the kickoff to 🎞

Would you ever willingly move into an “old folks home”? 👵🏻👴🏾

For filmmaker and cultural anthropologist Dominique Keller, it was an intentional choice for her latest project, “Love: The Last Chapter,” an NFB film exploring what love looks like in the final years of life.

Her fascinating foray into the culture of our elderly unveiled a heartwarming, humorous, and sobering look at a group I’ve been wanting to cover on our show for a long time. The film allows the viewer to be a fly on a wall in a completely observational piece that follows three elderly couples navigating their relationships in a real seniors home (which Keller literally moved into, immersing herself as one of the residents).

Keller’s latest work is perhaps one of the most unique perspectives ever shown of this underrepresented group.

We’ll be talking to Keller on Friday’s episode, following the Wednesday premiere of the film at the Calgary Underground Film Festival.

If you’d like to join Dominique and I for the screening, tickets are now available at the link below. I look forward to sharing more with you on Friday!

18/11/2021

If you’re an avid listener of anticulture, you’ll know that every season, I try to fit in a French culture highlight.

I thought no one would be interested, but my live interviews in France in season 3 amassed some of our most listens—in fact, 1,003 unique listeners tuned in!

I’m honoured and humbled, because how France and French identity shapes culture is truly something I’m fascinated by.

Did you know that France’s national motto is “Liberté. Égalité. Fraternité.”?

It means, “Freedom, Equality, Fraternity,” and refers to the concept that every French citizen is meant to be seen as equal, under the “ownership” of Marianne - the national “personification” of France. She’s literally an icon of what being French represents. For some, it’s a unifying symbol. To others, it’s exclusionary.

It’s a complex topic that I was first introduced to in a French Politics class at SciencesPo Paris (Sciences Po) in 2015, where I was undertaking part of my International Relations degree.

It made me think—how is racism perceived in France? What does a “national identity” really mean in a place where there is racial tension, Islamophobia, and anti-immigration at an all-time high? Where does Quebecois identity fit in? What about niche groups, like Franco-Albertans?

Well, I’m your guy.

This Friday, we have a unique take from Said Pastry nerd, a Parisian who now calls Calgary home. I loved chatting French identity with this guest and I can’t wait for you to tune in.

I wonder…what does a “national identity” mean to you?

FRIDAY:

This week, we’ll be chatting with Western Canada’s “Foodie of the Year” 2021: Said M’Dahoma (Said Pastry nerd)! 🥐

Said took it upon himself to master the art of French patisserie when he moved to Alberta, Canada from Paris, France to conduct his research for his PhD in Neuroscience seven years ago.

Leaving Paris also opened Said’s eyes to a new interpretation of his cultural identity, revealing just how “French” he was, but also developing a new appreciation and pride in his Comorian heritage. What’s Comorian, you ask? We’ll teach you on Friday. 😉

Make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss this delicious episode!
