In Febuary 1968, students from a Speech 219 broadcasted from the Peltier building over telephone wires to the student union as FNSC. The call letters stood for Nicholls State College, which was the name of the institution at the time. The actual campus radio station went on the air on Feb 19, 1972 as KVFG-FM, named after Nicholls president Vernon F. KVFG became the third FCC-authorized college radio station to broadcast on open airwaves in Louisiana, beating out a similar station at LSUNO by a just a few hours. In early April of that year, the station added a United Press International news wire. The station was renamed to KNSU in Jan 23, 1985 after the Louisiana Coast Guard agreed to give up the call letters. The station was relocated to Talbot hall in 1990. KNSU concentrated on news and music with offerings that changed with the trends and musical tastes of the time. In the late 1980s, the station adopted nicknames such as "Banana" and "The Edge." The station has been managed and financed by students since its founding. Students have consistently been the announcers, interviewers, and disc jockeys.
