Greg Wachsteter isn’t known for his fancy surfing or contributions to the surf industry. But… Greg is one of the most disciplined surfers I know. I have frequently woken up early for many dawn patrol sessions out in Montauk, only to see Greg paddling back as the sun is just rising over the horizon, already with an hour under his belt. His quote on his Instagram is “choose to be optimistic, it feels better “. Greg is a successful trader, one of the principles at Watermill Trading, a father, husband and no doubt brings his zeal into all aspects of his life. He also started Black Pool Coffee Roasters as a side project to do with his son. He bounces from NYC to Montauk weekly and never seems to be low on energy. He practices mindfulness and we get into some powerful conversation about mental health, living a purposeful life, and maintaining presence. He is our guest on this episode of Swell Season Surf Radio and this is a not to miss episode. Episode is now live… Click the link in the bio to listen …. In the fall of 2018, Maria Riley moved to the Rockaways and knew immediately that she had come home. Growing up, close to the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina, Riley always felt that her soul had been fed by water. A self taught photographer, over the past three years, Riley has spent almost every day documenting beach life, water birds, city scenes and her main focus, surf photography in Rockaway. Her work has recently appeared in the West Texas Literary Review and in The Kelp Journal. She is currently working on two photo projects and is writing a memoir, “Falling Waters.” Her first photo show is coming up on October 29th, at the “Avoid The Day” book store in Rockaway. She is probably best known among the NYC crew for her instagram handle: . We really enjoyed having her on as a guest for this episode. She brings an incredible amount of experiences and enthusiasm that you can't help but feel throughout this interview. We hope you enjoy... episode is now streaming. Click the link in the bio ….

Dylan Hronec is a 29 year old surfer from North Bellmore, New York. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Dylan has tackled many obstacles to get to where he is today. He has been surfing for almost 11 years. He developed a love for the water from a young age, but was always involved in other sports as surfing was not considered a possibility for him. That is, until Dylan went online one day and came across videos of Jesse Billauer, an accomplished quadriplegic surfer, and became instantly determined. Dylan’s family supported this dream of his and started looking up possible surf outings in the area. They found a couple of local non-profits and soon enough, Dylan was riding his first wave. He is now more commonly known as The Surfing Samurai and has gone on to surf in Kelly Slater’s Wave Pool, competed in the US Adaptive surfing Championships and is a brand ambassador for both the We The 15 campaign and the Local Non-profit, Surf For All. He’s appeared in numerous media outlets such as CBS, ESPN, Buzzfeed and more. We are super stoked to have him as our guest on this episode of Swell Season Surf Radio. Man in the Field: The Life and Art of Jim Denevan profiles Outstanding in the Field founder Jim Denevan, his trials of growing up in a turbulent family dynamic, and the artwork that came of it — both in his geometric land drawings and table-to-farm dinners through Outstanding in the field. Instead of bringing the food to the restaurant, Outstanding in the Field has brought the restaurant to the food since 1999. Hosted at one long table, with 100 to 1000 guests dining together, Denevan has set tables in vineyards, beaches, meadows, fishing docks, and city streets. Over 120,000 lucky patrons in all 50 states and 16 countries have experienced this once-in-a-lifetime event. We are fortunate to be joined by the Film’s Director, our friend Patrick Trefz , Producer, Jesse Carfield, and the subject of the film, Artist Jim Denevan for this episode. It's an incredible conversation and we encourage all of our listeners to check out this film. It is currently streaming on all platforms. Episode is now live… click the link in the bio.

This incredible book showed up in the mail the other day by & . For those of you who are not familiar with the , you should. It’s probably one of the best action sports podcasts out there. (Besides Swell Season of course 😉) This book was made during a pilgrimage up the California coast in 2019 and it’s filled with beautiful imagery, iconic figures and insightful words. Owen Tozer is a masterful photographer and Matt Barr is one of the best interviewers in the game. The two have captured something special in this book and we highly recommend you seek it out. Happy 4th of July… Artwork by former guest and artist Jeremy Dean . An incredible commentator on race, politics and American History. His process for making these pieces is painstakingly slow and detailed. He deconstructs each individual string from an American flag and then reconstructs them one by one tying them to needles. Each work is a dedication and critique of this country. Love of one’s country is also seeing it for all its beauty and flaws. We can love it and still be self critical of it in the hopes of making it a more perfect union. Check out past episode 52 with Jeremy Dean for more…

Notes from the Field: Surfing in the Time of Coronavirus update: On this episode we talk catch up with Drew Blauschild of Kookbox Surfboards. He's been hunkered down in Montauk for the last month and has been an outspoken critic of the irresponsible behavior in the lineup out in Ditch. Drew has been a surfing celibate for over 30 days and counting... Next we chat with Big Wave Specialist and Owner and operator of Skudin Surf Schools, Will Skudin about the effects the pandemic has had on the local community of Long Beach and what's the rule of thumb when it comes to surfing under lockdown. We then look to the end of the tunnel and what it will mean to his business, plus his latest partnership with American Wave Machines and the American Dreams Mall in NJ, just outside of NYC. We are covering surfing in the time of Coronavirus all through the lockdown. This is our 2nd in a series. As we become more isolated with the lockdown, we felt it was important for us to help cover our surf community and keep ourselves informed. Have a story or thought you want to share?
