The League of Women Voters of the Hill Country Texas has scheduled a meeting on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 9 a.m., at The Hen's Nest, in Bandera. Breakfast will be "Dutch treat.” Individuals interested in the League are welcome to attend.

There was a time not that long ago it seems when most streets in Bandera were gravel. The exception was Main Street and some of the tree named streets, but even then those were only paved for a limited distance. Those gravel backstreets could be a nightmare on laundry days with clothes hanging on the clothes line out in the back yard. Depending on wind direction my mom would make some calculations and then send me out to get the water hose and wet the street to keep the dust down.

On this day in 1923, radio station WBAP in Fort Worth established the basic format for country music variety show broadcasting (a format subsequently taken over by Nashville's "Grand Ole Opry" and Chicago's "National Barn Dance") with a program that featured a fiddler, a square-dance caller, and Confederate veteran Capt. M. J. Bonner.

On Monday, Jan. 5 and 19, the Christian Classics Book Club will meet. On Wednesday, Jan. 14, the Hill Country Breastfeeding Coalition will meet. Lunch is provided and any breastfeeding or pregnant family is welcome to join. On Thursday, Jan. 15, the Alamo Resource Conservation and Development Senior Lunch will be at the library. All seniors are welcome to join in for lunch, bingo and friendship at this free event. On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Lakehills Area Library Garden Club will have a presentation about seed starting. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be another event from Alamo Resource Conservation and Development, this time it will be a senior lunch and learn.

Jehu D. "Jud" Ashmore, beloved Texas radio and television meteorologist, World War II U.S. Navy veteran, and adventurer whose warmth and humor touched generations of viewers and listeners, passed away peacefully in his sleep in his home in Bandera, on Dec. 31, 2025, at the age of 101.

On this day in 1937, the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge was established. The refuge was sited on more than 47,000 acres on Blackjack Peninsula, located midway between Rockport and Port Lavaca on the Gulf Coast, purchased by the federal government with money raised by selling stamps of migratory birds. Later purchases increased the area of the refuge to more than 54,000 acres on the peninsula and more than 56,000 acres on Matagorda Island.
