With three children already, my wife and I decided a few months ago to host a foreign exchange student for a change of pace. We welcomed a 16-year-old Swedish girl, whom we'll refer to as Lora. She was forthcoming, always eager to discuss life in Sweden compared to the US. She recently celebrated a birthday, and we all sat around as Lora FaceTimed her family overseas. After participating in a Swedish birthday custom, my wife became irate and told Lora she needed to leave as soon as possible. Lora was heartbroken, unable to understand how a tradition led to this. I made an effort to intervene, but my wife remained firm. The following day, as Lora packed, karma visited our household in a dramatic way. ⬇️
