Sdban Records is proud to announce the first official reissue of Coal Mining, the 1978 debut album by Dutch jazz pianist Rene van Helsdingen. With this debut, van Helsdingen set the tone for a decades-spanning and self-directed career in jazz.

Often mistakenly referred to as Piano, a result of the album’s back cover design prominently featuring the word, Coal Mining is both a literal and symbolic title. It alludes not only to van Helsdingen’s brief academic past in mining engineering, but also to the depth and labor of jazz creation itself: layered, gritty, and forged under pressure.

Now reissued for the first time, nearly five decades later. Available via Sdban Records on September 26, 2025.

The Brussels-based group—originally formed in 2016 by pianist Antoine Flipo and drummer Martin Grégoire—welcomes bassist Issam Labbene as an official third member, opening up a richer, more immersive sound and setting its sights on the rhythms of the modern city. 🏢
