The chances that you’ve met someone from Guatemala are high—especially if you live anywhere in the Americas. But this land of ancient kingdoms and modern booms has grown far more diverse than its roots of Spanish, Mayan, and Mestizo heritage would suggest.

Today, Guatemala is home to a new wave of well-paid expats living in sleek, corporate live-work-play enclaves and the deep traditions of the past are being forced to reconcile with the demand for gourmet food, designer clothes, and luxury tech.

The echo of global modernity is rising to a shrill, highlighting the stark contrast between where the country began, and where it’s going. It’s easy to step out of a rooftop cocktail party into the shadows of hardship in under a minute. The largest country in Central America holds two worlds in one breath.

How will I remember Guatemala? It’s complicated. As a place to reconnect with old friends and to create new stories. But also as a place that heralds the end of the road for me.

I have come to El Salvador in an unusual time in this country’s history. This was never a tourist destination top on most people’s lists. When I was a kid, I remember hearing stories of never-ending wars that devolved into gang violence and the ever present poverty throughout.

Now, almost two percent of the country’s population is in jail during a period of extreme government crackdowns on crime. Everyone here knows at least someone in jail, guilty or otherwise.

And while walking through Salvadoran neighborhoods that were once ravaged by gangs, I can’t take for granted the grim realization that doing this five years ago would’ve been utter su***de.

I may not like what’s been done here but just about all of the detractors of these imprisonments without hearing come from the outside, just like me. Talking to people who can finally shop for groceries or let their kids play on street, the answer is very different than mine.

What is peace without justice? Or must justice come later, when the blood is washed from the streets?
