In recent years around the Northeast, a new activity has begun to pop up - Rail biking! While it may appear to be a more modern activity, it’s acturally been around for a long time. In the 1900s railroad workers would use rail bikes to cover long distances for maintenance instead of walking! Telegraph companies also used them to maintain lines that ran alongside the tracks. While the rail bikes were handy, it could also be dangerous. If a train came along, it required a quick dismount 👀

Modern day rail biking is done on abandoned tracks so they are safe to use and because it uses existing railroads, it’s also sustainable - there are no changes being made to the surrounding environment! It’s also pretty accessible for all ages and fitness abilities. While it’s starting to get more popular here in the US, you are can also rail bike in other parts of the world, like Japan and France!

The girls and I went while we were in New York and used . They have multiple locations throughout upstate NY, plus spots in Maine, New Jersey and Colorado!

𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐰:
🚲 They offer double or quad bikes; we opted for the quad so we could all be together
🗑️ Each car has a basket attached to the back so you can put bags, water bottles and other belongings in it while you ride
💰 $100/2-seater, $180/4-seater
📍 We went to their Thurman Station location. It was 9 miles round trip and about 2 hours in length. The tracks run alongside the Hudson River, giving you beautiful views and opportunities to see wildlife (we saw a few deer)!

We all loved this activity. It was really fun, a little bit physical and a great way to see beautiful autumn foliage.

Hike 40 of the year was a good one! I got to meet up with CeLynn and Brad of while they were home in New Hampshire. If you aren’t following them yet, you’re missing out. They’ve been living on the road for the most of the year exploring all over the US, doing epic stuff and will be heading out again soon for another long roadtrip!

We enjoyed the beautiful weather and the foliage we still have at Pawtuckaway State Park.

Who’s ready to go horseback riding?!

The gals and I went on our recent girls trip in Lake George, NY and had a lot of fun. We used for our adventure and I would definitely recommend them if you’re in the area 🐎

⏰ The ride was an hour in length
💸 $80/pp
🤠 Each rider is provided with a horse based on size/height and the staff helps with all equipment adjustments, like stirrups
🪖 Helmets are available

I rode as a kid so I loved getting back in the saddle (although the horse I was on, Daniels, was a draft horse and much larger than the Quarter horse I used to ride 😅)

The trail wasn’t too strenuous and the views were stunning!!! I definitely recommend checking it out if you’re in the Lake George area 🙌🏻

Hike 38 of the year a short but fun exploration of in New York! While the trail wasn’t long, there are lots of steps and narrow walkways so be prepared if you bring children or have mobility issues.

This was the first of many places we went on our girls trip to the Lake George, NY area.

Why aren’t more people talking about this spot for a fall travel destination?!

‼️But first, if you’re new here, follow for more travel, hiking and adventure content!

I had never really heard much about Lake George, New York before one of my best friends proposed it for a girls trip this fall. You would think that as a New England girlie I wouldn’t want to leave the area in the fall but upstate New York did not disappoint!

There were so many fun activities to do! We hiked, explored caves, went horseback riding, rail biked and hung out at a treehouse, all within 3 days!

In the downtown area, a ton of places were already closed for the season. There weren’t a lot of options for shopping or dining, but it was quiet and not crowded, which is always appreciated in tourist town. The lake was gorgeous and we enjoyed strolling the streets overlooking it. We got dinner in nearby Glens Falls, which I would recommend if you want more options!

I was pleasantly surprised by all the activities we could do and the beauty of the area, plus the foliage was so nice!

Have you been to Lake George, NY?

I, for one, am not a person who likes haunted houses during spooky season. If it was just walking through a creepy place with decorations and sound effects, sure, but I don’t like people jumping out at me, grabbing me or yelling in my face. So around Halloween, I don’t usually go out of my way to visit places like that.

However, one of my best friends has taken her kids to a place in Lee, New Hampshire called Haunted Overload, at DeMeritt Hill Farm. There is a spooky walk through the woods that’s about a mile long. It’s not a straight mile though, it twists and turns through the woods, spooky structures and decor.

👻 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐞: 7-8:30pm (Thursdays only); Explore things in the dark with the lights and sound effects, but not actors scaring you. $25.00
🧟‍♂️ 𝐇𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝: Times vary by day (Friday-Sunday Nights). This gives you the award winning scares they are known for. $38.00

Besides the haunted walk, there is also a beer garden, small farm store, pumpkins, animals and hayrides. It’s fun for the whole family!

It’s not just a place for thrills and screams, it’s a year-round work of art 🙌🏻

In New Hampshire, foliage season brings lots of tourists and leaf peepers (I don’t blame them, it’s incredible here in the fall) but that means the White Mountains are often packed with out of state hikers and lots of traffic. Last year, Jarrett and I wanted to take a hike near the end of peak foliage but didn’t want to battle the crowds further north, so we opted for a hike in the Lakes Region instead.

Mt. Roberts is part of New Hampshire’s 52 With A View list, so we knew we’d be guaranteed a beautiful view. The trailhead can be found at the Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area, not far from Lake Winnipesaukee. The trail wasn’t busy at all, we only saw a handful of people the whole time. Throughout the hike we had views of the lake and were surrounded by bright foliage. At the summit we had stunning views of Mount Washington in the distance.

This may not be the most popular hike in New Hampshire, but we really enjoyed ourselves here. If you want to continue exploring, the conservation area has many other trails to explore, plus a disc golf course!

This post is in honor of National Fossil Day today!

One thing that’s important to me when reviewing trails and adventures is giving my honest opinion…which can be hard because basically everything I do has me screeching with excitement and I’ll gush it so much people probably think I’m not giving my actual thoughts (spoiler alert: I’m easily excitable and pretty much love everything). So believe me when I tell you, you could probably skip this spot if you visit Colorado. Maybe I’d feel differently if I had done the guided walking tour with a geologist, so I’d consider going back to try that.

I was excited because I love dinosaurs and any chance I have to see some fossils or bones, I take it. I was expecting some really cool sights here but sadly, I was pretty disappointed. The “hike” itself is on a paved road. There is a shuttle you can take but we opted to walk, which I regretted because it was so hot out and the pavement was radiating heat. The things were saw were cool, but I guess I was just expecting more to see!

At one point we ventured off the paved path and followed a dirt trail up onto a ridge (aptly named the Dakota Ridge Trail). From the ridge we got some pretty views of Red Rocks Amphitheatre (which is where we were headed next) and saw some wild flowers but that was about it.

My favorite part about our stop here? All the prairie dogs in the parking lot!

Last fall we decided we wanted to hike one more 4,000 footer before the winter weather rolled in. We picked Mt. Jackson. We were able to get up there early enough to find parking. There are two spur trails during your ascent - the first is to Elephant Head Rock, which is fairly close to the beginning of the hike. The colors of the foliage from this spot were gorgeous and really vivid. The next spur takes you to Bugle Cliff. From both spots you’ll get beautiful views of Crawford Notch, Crawford Notch Station and the AMC Highland Lodge.

After a long climb, some minor water crossings, and lots of scrambling, you’ll make it to the summit. It got a little crowded but there is still plenty of room to sit for snacks and pictures. From the summit you can see the famous red roof of the Omni Mount Washington Hotel in the distance. You can also get views of the Presidetial Range. If you are up for a challenge, you can do a longer hike to connect to another summit or loop over to Mt. Webster, a summit on New Hampshire’s 52 With A View list. We considered doing the latter, but after checking the time, we decided to head back down. Side Note: At the summit, you’ll most likely be surrounded by Gray Jays, who are well fed by hikers and assume everyone wants to give them snacks. They are chunky little cuties and are very photogenic.

The way down felt like it took foreverrrrrr so we rewarded ourselves with beers at in Bethlehem.

Hike 37/52! This was a repeat trail that I did earlier in the year but this time Jarrett joined me. It was a coastal hike so not a ton of foliage when we went but we saw a few blue herons and a snake 🐍
