I think some things expire and without a ‘Social Media’ announcement 90% of these people who are upset about this wouldn’t even know this was happening. Somehow it is debatable for Dr. Seuss but for the hundreds of other books that are retired this year, they won’t know a single title. We can’t keep all the books that are printed that’s just ludicrous. Not every single thing a good author writes is good work! Maybe I’m wrong but I think it’s fine to remove something from the shelf if you replace it with something better.

I am confounded by the social media and unrest over retiring of a few children’s titles. It happens all the time! And sometimes only for the reason of low sales! A book is not sacred because of the author who wrote it. I mean if the publisher was concerned about accurate representation you can keep the tax and open it up to new artist to re-create accurate images that reflect modern norms. Why does it have to be all nothing?

Neologians, Is this the natural evolution of art under the scrutiny of social media or is cancel culture the new white wash? Are you saying we can only keep Dr. Seuss’s books that portray white kids because they are ‘depicted accurately?” Or is it something else?

The decision includes books such as And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street and If I Ran the Zoo. They have been criticized for how they depict Asian and Black people.
